catoctin wx
note to self: don't build a nuclear reactor in a subduction zone prone to megaquakes... Diablo Canyon Power Plant is an electricity-generating nuclear power plant at Avila Beach in San Luis Obispo County, California. The plant has two Westinghouse-designed 4-Loop pressurized-water nuclear reactors operated by Pacific Gas & Electric. The facility is located on about 750 acres (300 ha) in Avila Beach, California. Together, the twin 1,100 MWe reactors produce about 18,000 GW·h of electricity annually, supplying the electrical needs of more than 2.2 million people, sent along the Path 15 500-kV lines that connect to this plant. Diablo Canyon is designed to withstand a 7.5 magnitude earthquake from four faults, including the nearby San Andreas and Hosgri faults. Equipped with advanced seismic monitoring and safety systems, the plant is designed to shut down safely in the event of significant ground motion. RUNNAWAYICEBERG
this has been happening for hundres, thousands, and millions of years. however, as the population grows we build and build into territories that are volitale. combine that with the advancement of the internet with social media and such, we can see wats going on around the world in minutes. this not to lessen wat is happening now. its a tragedy for so many families and communities. it will take years to clean up and rebuild. unfortunately, one community cleans up while the next one is on the verge of a disaster themselves. such is living....but lets not freak out like we on the verge of "2012". amazing pics and videos from Japan. we have better eyes there threw media coverage than in Sri Lanka couple years back. My prayers go out to the Japanese people but I really didn't expect 10 foot surges in Hawaii and 6 foot surges in San Fran. Yeah, but they have to do this. It's not like anything like this hasn't happened before. 1946 and 1964 were pretty devastating. If I lived there, I would take it seriously. It's really stupid not to, but stupid is a fairly common cause of death.

JamieOber
I'm printing this and putting it up in my classroom. My next door neighbor is a VFD, give him credit for that. He thought of it when they had people keep driving past barriers across a flooded roadway during Ivan, and having to rescue them. One didn't make it, and one of his colleagues nearly drowned. It's amazing to me how many people will doop-de-doo, ain't-nobody-gonna-tell-what-to-do right into dying.

(AP) -- Sheriff's deputies and firefighters in Washington's Grays Harbor County are knocking on doors in low-lying areas of the small coastal community of Moclips, handing out tsunami warning fliers and urging residents to evacuate. The road to the beach in Moclips is blocked off with yellow tape. The flier warns "This is not a drill," adding that an initial tsunami wave of around 3 feet is forecast for the area Friday morning after a massive earthquake in Japan. And the flier adds, "Following waves are expected to be larger." In Pacific County, the sheriff says an orderly evacuation is happening in Long Beach, Ilwaco and Ocean Park.
