Damage In Tolland

Recommended Posts

Garden really needs rain now. Only 0.54" precipitation this month, and it's starting to show signs of drought. My gardens are difficult to water, I've been doing my best to get them some water in the evenings, but I would love a nice thunderstorm.

Amazing we can see all these days with 90/70 conditions and not get a thunderstorm or shower. NWS forecast looks dry for the next 7 days, very disappointing, soil is going to start cracking with this heat and W winds drying everything out even more. Next ridge will totally bake us with the soil moisture declining rapidly after a wet spring/early summer.

I have had about half a dozen Early Girl and beefsteak tomatoes so far, so can't complain too much. Corn is setting its ears now, another Japanese eggplant is ripening, and a zucchini is ready. Also have some nice French leaf lettuce to harvest in a few days, it's been watered constantly in the heat and has held up well, perking back up every night after getting a bit wilted in the daytime sunshine. Should pick another dozen green beans tomorrow, maybe make them Thai-style with coconut milk, curry paste, and some ginger. Garden has been very productive this year....had about 2lbs arugula or so in May/June, and about 6 dozen peas in the spring, and the summer crop is coming in nicely. But a good rainfall would ensure a better harvest.

Same here Zuck.. Its really getting annoying.. Its hard to water everyday, but the plants need it. Its getting so dry and hot that they sometimes need twice a day I feel like cause the water in the pot just absorbs so much. Its come to the point where I just put the hose spray on mist and fire away wetting all of the leaves. I know its not good for the leaves, but its so hot that the water will dry up quickly on the leaves. I have picked about 4 zucchini and I have 7 more growing now! Along with tomatoes and cucumbers, and my newly growing watermelon!

Love the wildflowers. I want to get one going as well in the next couple years. Here are a couple shots I took the other day.

Purple Coneflowers with a welcome guest (Bumblebee) They love them! You can also see my Bee Balm in the background.

Daylilies. Looking nice. Daisies in the background are past peak.

And my Hydrangeas. Sweet!

Had to fire up the sprinkler today for the first time. No burning on the lawns yet..but today is day 8 of no rain. Still almost 3 inches of rain this month and most of that was last week..but it's amazing what one dry, sunny hot week will do to the soil moisture. Pray for your lawns and gardens during the TORCH

Everyones is, grass is not some supernatural plant, its the same as everything else, I have cut my lawn once in the last two weeks, and dont plan on cutting it again until just before vacation. Its the dog days, I only cut my clients lawns every ten to 12 days right now, and that is because they request it.

Unless you have zoysia, its not going to grow that much......................well unless you just hit it with some serious, never mind :P (kevin)

And than some.

I hit my grass in mid-summer with jonathan green winterizer - works well , doesn't push growth but gives some much needed nourishment.

I am sure there are winterizers you could use, but I like this one, have used it for the last couple of years, and it saves me as I always stop watering with the summer heat; love to watch the deep greens in come back in late August .

The other fertilizer I have used in mid-summer is Milorganite, which works well but is a more expensive than JG when you multiply the bags out per /SF.

A slow release fertilizer and spot treat the crab grass in summer and you will be fine in fall, i do it every year

Yeah, I've seen the JG at the local True Value store. I may look into what they have to offer. I've also used Milorganite. I used this spring in fact. I'm going to wait till late August fertilize again. I just fertilized about 3 weeks ago. I also think I may bomb my lawn with Lime. I'm beginning to think thesoil runs acidic in the area given the types of plants that are growing. One thing I forgot to do this year, since I am new to this, is put down the Corn Gluten in Spring as a pre-emergent control.
