eekuasepinniW
New poolside extention to the tropical garden. Missed the datura flower here. Long red tassle is Love Lies Bleeding. Also got a little sumtrana banana in there. Overall not too bad given the lousy night time temps. My ornamental sweet potato vines are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay behind this year and it's ruining things. I've been compensating by using copious amounts of lawn food on everything. Standard stuff along the front wall... California poppies are pretty but are too whiny about wind/rain which tend to tangle the foliage into a mess. even tried some bougainvillea this year... the color is so neon. Didn't get a shot of my most prized possession for this year-- a siam ruby banana. My thailand giant elephant ear was a flop... every source I came across said they take full sun and that's absolutely not the case for mine. I'm currently nursing it back to heath in the greenhouse... might be able to get some 6 foot wide leaves by September.

Logan11
My pumpkins and squash are finally taking off fast..... They have about a six/seven week window now of optimum wx (assuming seasonal) to do their thing. They have about a six/seven week window now of optimum wx (assuming seasonal) to do their thing. I think they'll be fine. I have a lot of different types of squash (yellow straightneck, zucchini, patty squash, Cheyenne Bush, Marina de Chioggia) and they're all doing well. Squash are pretty hardy. My first zucchini is almost ready to harvest, can't wait to throw it on the grill with a Japanese eggplant that is almost ready for harvest as well. Logan11
Sounds great..... my squash will start to grow uncontrollably and take over part of the lawn ..if past years are precedent. I won't even have to weed anymore. BTW ..did you know a pumpkin can last 10 months without rotting.... I brought one of my big ones into the living room for a halloween themed display last October and it sat there month after month all winter and into spring. I finally moved the thing onto the porch after danger of freeze was past and there it sits still looking fine....going for a second halloween soon. quote name='nzucker' timestamp='1310175818' post='799509'] I think they'll be fine. snowNH
I just went outside and looked at my tomatoes and it seems I have blossom end rot on about 3-4 of my tomatoes on the same plant. I have 12 tomatoes on 1 plants and I think so many fruits are just stressing the tomatoes. Any one have this problem? Anyone have remedies? Its not bad right now but will probably get worse if I don't do anything. I heard calcium will work?
snowNH
Flowers Galore with my cuke plants... I probably have close to 30 mini cukes starting with about 3 bees pollinating them. Its amazing how bees found the garden and how nature works... As for my bottom end rot, I picked up some compost and plant food for them. I put a layer of compost on top for more nutrients, hopefully that works.
skierinvermont
Summer finally here in the garden.. got my first zuke today. Sungold cherry tomatoes the last week. 100s of beans in the last week. The last of my first lettuce and assorted greens planting. My first beets too. My pumpkin plant is 20+ feet long now with 6 secondary vines 1-5 feet long and a couple pumpkins growing. Still hoping for 500 pounds but I'm a little behind schedule and don't have enough secondary vines. The leaves and stem are massive.. this plant is truly a beast. Fascinating to watch it grow. I should do a time lapse of just one afternoon.
nzucker
Summer finally here in the garden.. got my first zuke today. Sungold cherry tomatoes the last week. My pumpkin plant is 20+ feet long now with several secondary vines and a couple pumpkins growing. Still hoping for 500 pounds. 500lbs? How do you get it out of there? Hire a forklift for the afternoon? My first zuke is ready, along with another Japanese eggplant, and a couple tomatoes. I've been getting Early Girls and Beefsteaks on and off for about a week down here in the tropics. First head of cauliflower should be ready in 4-5 days, along with another dozen or so beans. Not bad so far, although the deer have taken their toll on some stuff outside the main garden. I have two five-foot tall Lemon Boy tomato plants that each have close to 20 fruit in the main garden, and it looks as if they should ripen soon as they've reached full size and lost the bright green. One cluster has seven tomatoes in it! Lemon Boy hybrids are some of my favorite with the bright yellow color and sweet flesh, can't wait for these two plants to mature, as they usually produce a ton of delicious fruits. Great summer for gardening.

Mr Torchey
Overwatering, soil PH, inadaquate draining of soil...many reasons BINGO! Excellent call irv, snow nh is always talking about watering, instead of water 2-3 times a week, deeply, he seems to water almost everyday. Over watering is the biggest mistake I see with gardens and lawns. Good call irv.

Over watering is the biggest mistake I see with gardens and lawns. Good call irv. thanks, well those are probably the top 3 reasons for it. No guarantees of course. I'd say overwatering is 90% the reason, given it has been fairly cool and wet this spring/summer. Given the weather we have had up this way, there is no reason for watering more than twice a week, IMO. Check your soil PH and aeration, too. Its been >80 an humid for two weeks now with rain only a day a week.. maybe in the spring its was cool and wet, but the past month has not Been.. MHT had probably had one good bout of rain the past month.. June 21-22 that's about it
