nzucker
I thought my soil was just about dried out enough to be worked so I could get something planted - then this deluge. I had to get the lawn cut (in the rain) and no time for the garden. So....we are looking at May 22 or later before I can plant anything I guess.... I only plant a few things ...butternut squash , pumpkins, cukes, several tomato and pepper plants.... It sounds like you have an awesome garden, Rick, that's very impressive for the cold climate up there. I might suggest that you try some cool weather crops like lettuce and arugula, considering your elevation and latitude. Growing things like greens requires much less fertilizer/inputs/manure, and they're also much hardier and can survive occasional frosts and even temperatures in the 20s sometimes! All of the cabbage family would also be a great choice for you; I happen not to be a huge fan of cabbage itself, but cauliflower and broccoli are wonderful vegetables. Even though I'd say my eggplants and tomatoes are doing quite well this year, the best stuff in my garden currently is the arugula and cauliflower. I've already had three small harvests of arugula; it should be ready for a fourth and larger harvest by early next week with the sunshine and 70s forecasted for Saturday/Sunday...I have three more small beds of arugula and various lettuces which have just germinated, so by early to mid June I will have way more greens to harvest. Here are a few shots from my garden... Cauliflower, about 10X its original size as a seedling: Arugula, with Brussels sprouts in the background, both grown from seed planted on 4/9 (both great cold weather crops): Brussels sprouts, needs to be staked: Ichiban (Japanese) eggplant, recently bought as a seedling: Beefsteak tomato, purchased as a small seedling 4/15: Heirloom winter squash, grown from seeds planted 4/9:
Logan11
Looks great. I'm sure I could do well with the hardier stuff and I have grown plenty over the years ...first garden in the early 1980's as a teenager. I particularly like brussels sprouts and they can survive decent frosts. Lately I haven't had much time for it and the vined crops require so little work ....they even tend to choke out the weeds. Last year I put in the pumpkins and squash on May 15th and had my first squash to eat around August 10th with a solid six weeks of good production and some right into early October when frost finally ended it. I'm going to bring a few hefty bags full of horse manure down to Saugerties and put a pumpkin patch down here also for the heck of it. LOL ..should get a few weeks of extra growing season there. The tenant can have a free pumpkin or two. It sounds like you have an awesome garden, Rick, that's very impressive for the cold climate up there. Mr Torchey
He is a professional landscaper. And BTW Joe, we don't need 4-5" of rain. Some steady light showers is fine. Well, thats not entirely true, I was a golf professional for many years, obviously having to take courses on turf management and care as part of the pga of america program. I changed careers a few years ago, always had a love for gardening and lawn care, so I thought what could be better than making it a career? I took only horticulture classes which is my passion (designing gardens), lawn care was self taught, read, intrernet online courses.........etc. ( its mostly common sense). If anyone is interested....... Book thats easy to read, common sense stuff.......... The Organic Lawn Care Manual By Paul Tukey
