Tropopause_Fold
His grass is thick to be sure..but there's alot of weeds in there as you can see. Keep the blade high. I keep it around 3 inches length of grass. Anything lower encourages weeds that's my move for this season. much higher cutting. i like the look better when it's short but even just two cuts this year with the mower set on 4 and 5 is making a huge difference. Yeah one of the biggest mistakes I see people make is scalping the grass short..thinking if they cut it short they won't have to cut it as often..It's awful for the grass, encourages weeds, and it looks terrible...and in the summer burns very easy as all the moisture is just sucked out

Damage In Tolland
Kids and I planted the garden this aftenoon between downpours. Mosquitos were vicious...even biting me which rarely happens Peas, carrots, cherry tomatoes, beans, cukes, broccolli, and peppers All this humidity and rain should get things growing within 7 days or so

nzucker
All this humidity and rain should get things growing within 7 days or so You think 4" of rain with temps in the 50s and persistent overcast is good weather for a garden? You'll be lucky if half the seeds don't get washed away. It sounds like a nice veggie patch you've got there, but this week's cut-off is definitely worrisome for those hoping for lots of fresh, homegrown vegetables this summer. Logan11
I thought my soil was just about dried out enough to be worked so I could get something planted - then this deluge. I had to get the lawn cut (in the rain) and no time for the garden. So....we are looking at May 22 or later before I can plant anything I guess.... I only plant a few things ...butternut squash , pumpkins, cukes, several tomato and pepper plants.... You think 4" of rain with temps in the 50s and persistent overcast is good weather for a garden? Really don't feel entirely safe from frost until we get to June. Even then I'm ever watchful. Years ago when my wife moved in with me I thought I'd be a nice guy and put out all her houseplants for a nice rainshower. I left them out (it was June). One morning I woke up and it felt chilly in the house. Then I saw what looked like frost on the lawn. I went outside and was horrified to see her ancient Jade looking a little sick. When I went to pick it up all the leaves fell off. Ooops. Wiped out about half of her plants in one fell swoop.lol

Noone in SNe is getting 4+ inches of rain and 50's in the highs the next 4 days..And yes moist conditions are good for seed germination

The "official" average last frost is May 20th, but it seems most years it is after that. Everyone's rule around here is no planting (except the plants that can survive frost) before Memorial Day. Of course, with that info the EPA might declare your yard a superfund site, maybe you could get some sort of research grant.

HoarfrostHubb
I saw my first red eft this morning on my lawn. This species only survives/thrives in healthy ecosystems. Worms aplenty. I do wish I had more time to dig up and replant the few dead spots but no big deal. The trees really leafed out big time the last week or so, especially the birches. So many of those. One bad thing about these downpours is that they are speeding up the rate the dogwoods and azaleas and rhodys are losing their flowers.
