Damage In Tolland

LOL, maybe if I lived in Tolland:

Summary of toxicology

1. Effects on Animals: Chlordane is a carcinogen, a potent toxin to the central nervous system, and a liver toxin in experimental animals. Upon contact, it is irritating to skin, eyes and mucous membranes. It is also a mutagen in mammalian cell systems and has been shown to cause reproductive effects in animals. The oral LD(50) for rats is mg/kg and 145 mg/kg for mice; and the dermal LD(50) in rabbits is mg/kg [NIOSH 1995]. Chronic exposure has resulted in degenerative changes in the liver, renal tubules, lungs, intestinal submucosa, and heart. Because it is stored in body fat, chlordane has a high potential for cumulative neurotoxicity [Gosselin 1984]. Rats administered 5, 10, 30, 150, or 300 ppm chlordane in their diet showed liver and myocardial damage at the doses above 150 ppm [ACGIH 1991]. At dosages above 30 mg/kg in the diet, chlordane interfered with reproduction in rats, but this effect was reversible after exposure ceased [Hathaway et al. 1991]. Chlordane tested positive in mutagenicity tests in several different animal systems [NIOSH 1995]. In a gavage study in mice, both males and females in the high-dose group developed a significantly increased dose-related incidence of liver cancer. In the 1987 report, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that there was limited evidence for the carcinogenicity of chlordane in animals [iARC 1987].

I unhappily applied the Bayer 24 hour Grub control yesterday and watered it in. I guess that chemical is pretty nasty, but the grubs were having a salad bar at my lawn. Sure enough, we saw a number of grubs on the surface today that were trying to escape the death by chemical.

I hope to try the milky spore method later this year (3 times per year for 2 years, then never needed again).

I probably killed billions of nematodes this weekend.

Also did more seeding and raked out flowerbeds, etc.

Awesome! At least the birds in the area were able to find the poisoned grubs easily. Nothing like poisoned grubs to help the little ones back at the nest grow.

Nice..!!! Glad to see you're taking the correct route and applying the proper materials

Detestable and utterly clueless.

How'd that go? I am contemplating doing that with my lawn. Is it easy?

The guy I spoke with at our local Agway recommended the slit-seeder (which I had never heard of). He said it rents for $40-50 per day at the local Taylor rental and he had done his yard and those of some family members. He was kidding that he should get to use it for free since he sends people to Taylor all the time for it.

How did the milky spore application go? I will apply my first treatment in a couple of weeks, after the Bayer stuff washes out. Do you use the tube thing to spread it?

Thanks for the info. My Milky Spore came in a pellet form that I put down with my rotary spreader. I had to play around with the settings but did not take long to figure it out. I've used the Bayer Advanced on my trees in the past, especially newly planted maples and birch to fend off borers, and other insects that could kill the tree. All the trees are flourishing now.

Looks good Scooter. Evrything in full bloom everywhere..even in Chesterfield...no denying it.. Summer is here

Looks like the grass there needs some work?

I don't have grass, I have a patio area, but that is still a work in progress as far as plantings go. The grass is my neighbors yard who is in the process of totally rehabbing a house.

not real easy, but not impossible

it is a heavy machine and is not self propelled. you have to have the blades set just right. too shallow and you get no penetration, too deep and you shred your lawn. it gets harder if you have bare spots.

if you have it set right, the machine pretty much pulls itself. hilly areas suck, but you have to be smart about it-make the machine do the work.

all in all i put down 2 big bags of seed in my yard, i have about 1/2 acre of grass

Push mower or tractor?

Just do it very gingerly with a push mower. and try to run over the new seedlings as little as possible

It is a self propelled walk behind. I am going to have it set pretty high anyway and will take it around the areas I am trying to grow new grass.

Coming in nicely overall. This has been a good grass season so far. Cool and wet.

Might have to put off mowing until Sunday.

I will probably do the first mowing this weekend - weather permitting - also. Grass went bonkers after laying down the fertilizer two weeks ago. Kev would be proud to know that I hit some dandelions with Ortho Weed-B-Gon Max last night. C-I-L-L my dandelions. Death.

Nice..yeah you have to poison those things or dig them up by the roots. Just a hideous sight in any lawn
