Just came in for a quick snack. Absolute inferno, high heat, get me back to the cool glaciers.

I've stopped adding for the day and am now in monitoring/keep raking it up mode. I have a whole bunch of rotten logs on there. Since I'm burning so close to the house, though, I'm getting my wirleless signal from my office. So, burning in the 21 century with my laptop.

Kinda chilly upwind of the smoke though 48.1/30 with a gusty wind.

There was the one really warm day in GC ...that day you mention that got well into the 70's all over. Otherwise it hasn't been a warm April, but the storm track and lack of - NAO has been hopeless for late season snow events.

This is a cool day compared to the past 2 weeks, or at least average.

Your place probably got close to 70F on Monday! ohmy.gif

How do you spread it? does it have setting for scotts speedy green 3000? TIA

The fertilizer and milky spore went down with a rotary spreader. Just had to play around with the setting.

Just finished up the spring yard cleanup. Raked, fertilized, grub killer, lime all put down. All that's left is edging and feeding the plants/shrubs.

When you think about...why would you want to put stuff on your lawn that increases the # of times you might have to cut it. LOL Not me ..if the lousy thing starts to die off in August I'm thrilled. Also it's helping me stretch out the 120 hour warranty on the Cub Cadet.

I'm with you Rick. The fewer times I have to mow the better. Last summer was great. The only down side was some of the fairways on the local course took a beating.

So sorry to hear that! That's the hard part about pets. We generally outlive them.

You gettin' another?

Yeah, that's the sucky part about pets I guess. ...the kids are taking it pretty hard. A few months ago I would have said NO WAY on another dog, but now... yeah I think we will. We'll probably wait a few months though. I'd rather wait until we're done with Summer Vacations and stuff so that we don't have to worry about boarding, or the hassles that come with traveling with a dog.

+1

Have you been out on a course yet? I went yesterday, shot a 43 with tons of rust. ...hit the ball pretty well, but around the greens I was awful. I played in Northfield, and I honestly don't think they've mowed the greens yet. They were slow, shaggy, and uneven as hell. I doubt they ever rolled them since they were aerated and sanded in the fall.

Oh man missed this, sorry dude, that sucks. Dogs are a part of the family.

Our BO is 17 now and slowing down big time, think about what you just went through and get bummed. Yea the kids really take it hard but it's a life lesson in a way. We have 4 dogs now, three little guys and BO the cow, he is 110 lbs they together weigh 30 . When Bo passes I will wait a while before I decide like you. Again sorry to read this man.

Also, another problem is average temps in April do not equal snow in our locations. sad.gif

Yeah, this really hasn't been a cold April; most stations are above average for the month despite the fact that it's felt relatively cold due to persistent cloudiness and lots of chilly east winds. For example, Central Park is +0.3F this April in spite of my having the impression that it's been chilly...we've had a lot of "cheap" sea-breeze highs where it gets to 58F or so at 1pm and then the sea breeze quickly arrives and the rest of the afternoon is spent in the upper 40s. We've also had a few midnight highs where a cold front has made the rest of the day unpleasantly chilly despite the fact the official high is a benign 60F or something of the sort. Also, April 2010 and April 2009 were both such unmitigated torches that having a normal April makes us feel as if we moved to the Greenland Ice Cap.

One thing to consider is that a real "cold" April includes frequent snow threats and below-freezing temperatures...just to think of an extreme example like 1982, NYC had a 10" blizzard on April 6th, another minor snowfall a few days later, and snow remained on the ground after the blizzard for about a week with three days straight of record low temperatures. 2003 also had a major snowstorm on April 8th that dumped 3-6" in NYC...patches of snow remained on the ground until April 11th, and trees didn't begin to leaf out until the final days of the month. And it doesn't look as if we're to join the leagues of those Aprils anytime soon, as temperatures should average above normal for the remainder of the month with the vortex parked in Northern Canada and little in the way of sustained troughing thus expected.

The highs have been farther above average than the lows coming in at +.5 through the 17th vs +.4 when lows are included.

Pretty negligible difference but I guess I can say it contributes to my point that we've gotten some warm highs in there on days that overall haven't been that warm.

Just a weird April in that it's felt rather "cool" but it's mostly been because of chilly east winds and persistent extreme cloudiness rather than actual cold airmasses. We certainly have not had any cold nights at all, I haven't had a single frost this April here, not even close. I could have safely planted my entire garden on April 1st and not suffered one bit. Notable lack of nights in the 30s..Been a much colder April than 2010 or 2009 but only because we haven't seen a tremendous heat wave as those years did, and we probably won't this April. Just a very wet, chilly month but lacking in overall crispness or notably cold airmasses.

I think it's been a pretty typical April, if anything slightly on the warm side. April is usually a pretty wet damp unpleasant cold month with the occasional warm sunny period thrown in, which we have had two of so far. Once back early in the month and then again for 2-3 days this past week. I worked in a T-shirt for the first time most of the last week which was nice.

I shouldn't say there's been a lack of nights in the 30s as actually 12 nights this April have fallen into the 30s in Dobbs Ferry, but almost all of them in the 37-39.9F range, which isn't exactly impressive. There's definitely been a notable lack of nights in the lower 30s with the coldest reading here being 34.8F on April 2nd. I am usually good for a hard frost or two in April, but not this time around. I've noticed the heating kick on quite a few times this month which means it hasn't been a torch, but it certainly hasn't been remarkably cold either, considering we haven't even recorded a freeze since the cold snap in late March, and none look to be on the way. Have only had 1 day in the 80s this April, however, compared to several last year.

This is a very normal April, in all senses of the word. From my general knowledge of the region's vegetation patterns, everything seems to be exactly on time with crocus/daffodils emerging in mid-late March, cherries/magnolias/pears blooming in mid-April, and trees set to leaf out towards the end of the month. Have the developing buds on the maples/beeches but certainly still another week or so before leaf-out, at the very least.

Unremarkable temperatures look to continue this week...60F tomorrow with lows in the mid 40s, around 50F on Tuesday with clouds/showers and lows in the upper 40s, warmer Wednesday with temperatures in the mid-upper 60s and lows around 50F, and then low 60s Thursday and Friday with lows dipping into the upper 30s or so...normal at Central Park today was 61/45, so we are pretty much hitting it on the head. This is good weather for everyone who has an interest in landscaping and gardening in NYC metro and SNE, just need a bit less rain and we'll be all set. Nice to see the extremes of the last two years settle down a bit.

It's interesting: it's a very normal April in terms of vegetation/average temps...YET the lack of any freezing nights would lead you to believe temps have been above average (which they really haven't been) AND the constant cloudy, chilly days with east winds would lead you to feel it's been a cold April (which it hasn't been either obviously)....it's all subjective. Having 2010 and 2009 as comparison markers makes it hard to remember what a normal April is. 2008 also had a massive heat wave mid-month, was absolutely brutal where I was in Poughkeepsie. 2007 was a near record cold April with a historic freeze in the Deep South that brought -10C 850s all the way to Atlanta, and then a tremendous Nor'easter on 4/16 that left accumulating snow as far south as Philadelphia and Atlantic City...

So I guess it's been a while since we've had a typical soggy, not too hot, not too cold, just right, terrible Northeastern April.

Down to one thigh-deep pile at the entrance of the driveway and a small mound along the road. Going to start on yard cleanup today as temps will be a comfortable mid-50s. Think I'll hold off on raking as winds will be gusty. Fertilizing with no regard for human life will commence this weekend or next if there's a good soaking rain in the offing.

More bad advice.

Fertilizing just after a rain or a few days before provides the maximum benefit to the lawn. No wonder you need to use so many chemicals.

More wrong info spewing from Plymouth...almost as bad as your weather posts

The only fertilizer you want sitting on grass for more than 24 hrs is the Crabgrass preventer/weed control

Everything else you want rain within 24 hours.

Stick to your internet business

Given your forecasting performance post 2/1 you should be the last person criticizing forecasting skills. :)

Anything more than 1/3 to 1/2 of rain in a short period of time is a no-no even with novex as it washes the nutrients thru the root zone. The lesco dealers and to an extent the product labels indicate 1/2 or less is best for those products that are feed or pre emergent.

Post emergent feed/weed and feed they recommend right after a rain or at least 2 days prior to a rain. In reality 3 days is probably best.

This is all right on the lesco.com website with specific reference to the weed and feed product and novex.

Telling people to put down fertilizer prior to what was a 2-3" rain event is bad advice. Most washed away.
