...STRANGE SOUNDS BEING REPORTED ACROSS THE FLORIDA BIG BEND...

THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL REPORTS OF VERY STRANGE SOUNDS FROM THE
WOODVILLE AREA SINCE ABOUT 645 PM EST. THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE BELIEVES THIS PHENOMENON IS BEING CAUSED BY THUNDER FROM
DISTANT LIGHTNING STROKES...BOUNCING OFF A VERY STABLE LAYER ABOVE
THE GROUND. THIS IS CALLED DUCTING...AND CAN ALLOW SOUND TO TRAVEL
UNUSUALLY LONG DISTANCES. THIS SOUND HAS BEEN MISTAKENLY
ATTRIBUTED TO POSSIBLE TORNADOES...BUT WE AT THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE WANT TO BE VERY CLEAR THAT THERE ARE NO TORNADOES...AND
NONE ARE EXPECTED.

That is too weird!

How did you find this one Wiz?

Any reports of damage?

I have heard ducting a lot living in both the Plains and Tennessee Valley. Maybe it just does not happen as much on the Gulf Coast. Some of the loudest thunder I've heard are times elevated convection is in progress over an inversion, with chilly air at the surface. The temp profile really reflects the sound down. I'm guessing they freaked out if they don't get those temperature profiles often at the Gulf Coast. I've heard louder single claps of thunder storm chasing. However my loudest overall thunderstorms, with all of the thunder quite noisy, have actually been during cool regimes under inversions. Crank it up, baby!

Hate to bump an old topic but I found a video:

http://video.godlike...dc23278f556c0d0

Now note that the video is from godlikeproductions (aka crazyland) but this might be the sound the NWS was talking about. Does sound a little bit like thunder.

ETA: Though now that I think about it, it does kind of sound like an airplane taking off. Being next to PBIA I hear it quite often when there are storm clouds.
