What will I do without being able to call and find out what time it is and what the weather is going to be???? /sarcasm off/ Seriously though, it's about time. Most people have a smart phone that they can see the time right on the phone and get on the internet to check the weather. Even my basic cell phone with my basic plan allows me to check the weather online for free.
Ian
It's not a bad pt about Isabel. Though as everything goes VOIP or wireless maybe less notable.
JeanineJ
I actually like to hear a voice. I guess now that I'm older, I'm old fashioned. I'm sort of sad about that news. I remember it would be a fun little break when temps would be topping out at 100 degrees and I would put it on speaker phone at the office and then we would all go have an ice cream break. The good ole days. I just called for old time sake. (Where did the last 15 years go? gosh.)
Shadowzone
In the early 80s living in Newport News, my phone number was 877-2112, and the weather number was 877-1221. I received a lot of calls if there was any threat of winter weather.
Ian
I've actually never called it though I have heard Howard talk about it a lot.
Ji
i used to call it all the time in the 80's and early 90's. Dont need it now. Sad to see it go. Howard's Pro Forecaster tag will have to be removed
MN Transplant
Keith Allen needs to do a little more promotion for his company. I put "D.C. Weather Services" into Google and got exactly 8 hits, 5 which were irrelevant and three to the Post story.
PhineasC
The seven other meteorologists - including Rob Luchessi and the wonderfully named Howard Phoebus - have their fans, too. They're strangers to us, but somehow friends.
Ian
Oh nooooo! This is a Horrible Catastrophe! What will I do without Howard Phoebus on speed dial?? Weeping... Kmlwx
Something like this exists/ existed? My inner weenie feels betrayed. I used to call if two or three times a day as a kid. Fostered my interest in weather. This weather line was up there with TWC in the 90s for me and the old Weatherstar 4000

Harv_poor
Does anybody remember another weather line run by weather enthusiasts in the early to mid-80s? I can remember dialing them before the February 1983 storm and it was obvious the recording was done by a snow lover. Then I think Bill Kamal got involved. And right after the first snowstorm in January 1987, which was on a Thursday, he was already calling for the Sunday night storm. And then he started ranting why the NWS wasn't putting up Watches and warnings. Before the internet the Verizon number was useful if you were out of town in the winter and you thought DC was getting snow. It was the only way to get the weather info. North Balti Zen
I keep having the Kramer moviephone episode from Seinfeld running through my head as I read this thread. Why don't you just tell moviephone what movie you would like to see?
