Not good for Wayne, Pompton Plains,Little Falls. Passaic river forecast to crest late Tuesday night with another round forecast for late week. Guess we'll be on TV again. :-(

Flood plain is so built up in those areas that some homes flood if three people upriver flush at the same time. During my NNJ years (up thru 1973) I can remember two mega floods (8/1955, 5/1968) and perhaps a half dozen other lesser but still serious events. ("Serious" threshold, for me, is closing Route 23 for multiple days.)

I agree. There are multiple issues that exacerbate the problem now. Much more upstream development has led to more retention ponds for developments therefore causing a slower decline in flood waters. In addition you have the Pompton Lakes dam which was created to alleviate flooding problems in Oakland. I'm not a flood gate expert but it seems to me that if your expecting large runoff from winter snows and the lake is already at max you would open the gates BEFORE flooding rains arrived. If they open those gates after Thursday-Friday's rain it will most certainly be a huge disaster downstream.
