dswx
Technical Implementation Notice 11-06 National Weather Service Headquarters Washington DC 1240 PM EST Tue Feb 8 2011 To: Subscribers: -Family of Services -NOAA Weather Wire Service -Emergency Managers Weather Information Network -NOAAPORT Other NWS Partners, Users and Employees From: Michelle Mainelli Chief, Systems Integration Branch NCEP Central Operations Subject: Removal of NCEP Model Analysis and Forecast Webpage: Effective April 5, 2011 On or about Tuesday, April 5, 2011, the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) will remove the Model Analysis and Forecast (MAF) webpages, currently available at: http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/ The NWS recently issued a Public Information Statement announcing NCEP’s new experimental Model Analysis and Guidance (MAG) website: http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov The MAF and MAG websites showcase the NWS suite of graphical numerical model analyses and guidance and observational database. Based on the comments received from the PNS, NCEP is moving forward with the plan to declare the MAG operational on Tuesday, March 15, and remove the older MAF website and all of its contents on Tuesday, April 5. In preparation for the removal of the MAF website, NCEP will replace the images available on the MAF with those generated by the MAG on Tuesday, March 15. This change will affect the images retrieved. The images may look different from those previously available on the MAF. In particular, the image size on the MAG is set to medium resolution: 1024 x 768. This means the image links labeled "course" and "fine" on the MAF will now default to the "medium" image. After March 15, during periods when the numerical models are running and producing output, images on the MAF may lead (be available sooner than MAF indicates), lag (not be available as quickly), or not be available for a few minutes. A document is provided on the MAG website to guide users in transitioning to the new MAG-provided static image links. Users are strongly encouraged to transition to the new static image links when they become available. For more information and updates, please refer to the MAG’s Latest Information and News document, at: http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/NCOMAGWEB/whats_new.html For questions regarding these changes, please contact: Bradley Mabe NCEP/NCO Systems Integration Branch Camp Springs, Maryland [email protected] NWS National Technical Implementation Notices are online at: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/notif.htm $$
MN Transplant
Well, that is going to take some getting used to. I like the 3 hr GFS interval, and it seems like it loads loops much, much faster than the old site. But I'll miss the simple text links and reloading to see if the next plot has come in. ag3
Well, that is going to take some getting used to. I like the 3 hr GFS interval, and it seems like it loads loops much, much faster than the old site. But I'll miss the simple text links and reloading to see if the next plot has come in. It takes time to get used to but after a while, its much better then the old site. I've been using it for the past month, and I find myself never going back to the old site. Also of note, The NAM has surface temps, along with 3 hour intervals. The srefs come out 10 minutes earlier. The NMM and ARW come out at least a half hour earlier. The ruc model also comes out much faster. The GFS and NAM are also rapid update. They come out as fast as the pay sites like SV or Accuwx. GFS has everything on 1 page. No need to scroll back and forth between surface and upper air data, like the old site. The graphics are a little lower resolution but Im sure when the actual site gets implemented, it will incorporate a higher resolution map base. Also, all the model runs are on the same page. No need to go back 3 pages to select 6z, 12z, 18z, or 0z. Its all on the same page and a user can easily toggle between runs to compare.
donsutherland1
I like the new format. I do hope that one will be able to get fine resolution maps once the new format is implemented.
ag3
I like the new format. I do hope that one will be able to get fine resolution maps once the new format is implemented. I believe I read somewhere here from an NCEP met that the final product will have finer resolution maps.

Wow
no more fine, medium, and course maps. They look to be using the zoom in/out deal like e-wall uses.

WinterWxLuvr
Yay, simulated radar on the GFS! I can't find that. Is it something that's coming later or am I blind?
Ellinwood
I'm a little concerned with how this will affect the weather model animator sites that I like to use, like these: http://www.dejongonline.com/weather/weathermodel.htm http://webpages.charter.net/wxjoe/animator.htm (doesn't work in IE/Chrome I think) http://johnkrasting.com/animator/ etc. It sounds like the direct links to the pulled NCEP images will no longer work, which would affect these sites. isohume
That page needed an update. I still hate looking at canned model data tho. It'd be cool if they made an interactive model page similar to AWIPs. It'd have to be watered down of course, but it would be a great resource. baroclinic_instability
Not a big fan at all, I think the layout is cluttered. I rarely use the site anyways since I can't stand the vorticity graphics--and that is the first thing I always look at is 500 hpa vorticity fields. It is cluttered though--but I think folks will get used to it quickly. Agree! Sometimes the simplest solutions, while not beautiful, are the best. Every time I see that animated gif I laugh. LVblizzard
I really don't have a strong opinion of the new format. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

StormJr
I'm a little concerned with how this will affect the weather model animator sites that I like to use, like these: http://www.dejongonl...eathermodel.htm http://webpages.char...oe/animator.htm (doesn't work in IE/Chrome I think) http://johnkrasting.com/animator/ etc. It sounds like the direct links to the pulled NCEP images will no longer work, which would affect these sites. Hey - I was directed here by a co-worker. Cool place. I maintain the www.dejongonline.com animator. I SHOULD be able to transition over to the new links. I was able to dig into their code and find single images that I will be able to make the animator code work with. For Example: http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/GemPakTier/MagGemPakImages/gfs/20110209/12/gfs_namer_000_1000_500_thick.gif I should be able to do that sooner rather than later. We'll see. earthlight
The one thing that stinks is trying to view the new site on a mobile device, too...they are taking a step back by removing the old ncep analysis site. Having the quick and easy links to click on made everything easier. I've tried getting used to the new format over the past several months, but I have come to the realization that I hate it. It's cluttered...the maps seem to be worse than the current operational site with less options. 3 hour increments are great, but I just can't really say I like it. Doesn't really matter in the end, though..I pay for other data so I just won't use the NCEP site.

Your webpage was given to us in my Meteorological Analysis class and I have been using it ever since. The ability to line up frames from different model runs is wonderfully easy. StormJr
I've updated my animator to include these new images. I have them under "NAM TEST - NCEP" and "GFS TEST - NCEP" for now. Once April 5th comes along I will take those out and replace the current GFS and NAM with these new images. Enjoy!

earthlight
I can't believe they are actually removing the old site completely. I really, really hate the new website. The new 3 hour graphics are great, but overall the format absolutely stinks up the place compared to the current one. I can say with 100% certainty that I will almost exclusively be using eWall and SV as my model sources from April 5th forward.
