NNE Winter Snow Thread II

It's warmer aloft...they're getting a nice FZRA. MPV has been getting moderate FZRA for over an hour now.

My temp is down to 30.6 and it still looks like liquid comin out of the sky. When I left Winooski at about 12:30 it was getting pretty bad, the roads were getting awful. As I headed south and east they slowly got better, just past Waterbury I drove out of snow/sleet into rain and clear roads. I'm getting anxious about this changeover, it is taking forever.

Edit: Holy crap, no sooner had I posted this and I look outside to see snow starting to mix in.

Nice, you are very close probably to snow. That's what I saw this morning in the northern Champlain Valley... icing at 30F, then some sleet, and finally snow. Snow took about an hour to get in after dipping below freezing at the surface.

I bet you are snowing by 3:30pm.

hows the snow quality up there right now?

Whats interesting is that as our surface temperature has been falling into the upper 20s, the summit of Mt Mansfield has been oscillating between 30-31F for the past 2 hours.

29F at 800ft and 30F at 4,000ft... marginal snow sounding but its getting the job done right now.

Ratios probably won't be much better than 8:1 tonight unless I see those temps start to cool overhead.

Looks like Middlebury is about to get crushed, too bad I just left campus a few days ago.

29.4/28 there and snowing....

Everyone up here is about to get crushed... QPF tonight is just incredible.

This will be a huge event for the Champlain Valley though where 12"+ snowfalls are much harder to come by... especially the CPV south of BTV which doesn't seem to get into a lot of the little meso-scale events that BTV north gets.

The CPV has been getting a lot of big snowfalls lately though...Middlebury had 20" in both the 1/3 and 2/24 storms last year, 13" in the 1/28/09 storm, and about 25" in the February 2007 storm.

Not sure if it is "climate change" or just fortunate but the climo seems to be shifting towards bigger snowfalls. Maybe we will pay down the road though.

Lyndonville AWOS is down to 1/2SM mod SN.

18z NAM looks a bit further east... you are going to be very, very close my friend.

Up here we are now comfortable at all snow, but I feel for some of those central/western NY folks who the NAM had getting crushed. If yesterday's western NAM runs were right, it would be snowing 1"/hr in BUF right now.

I think ALB has a chance at something significant now.

I don't know. It's up again at 255, and winds aren't doing much. I think it just came through LEB

Yeah...there's something else that went on there. A little cold pocket or something. It was 5C when I called the AWOS though so there was a quick 46F to 41F drop before climbing back up to the current 44F. The Rumney RWIS has been a little erratic too between 41F and 44F. Maybe there's a little low level drainage cold leftover.

I gotta run out for a few hours. Front through Hanover and even Enfield NH. Still at my high 48.1F with a south wind. I will leave my weather station up http://www.metrocast.net/~wxeye/

Here are 2 pictures top one now and bottom one from mid morning. Interesting to see how much snow depth we have lost in 6 hours.

I was just going to post this. They just doubled the MPV projection. 18" would be incredible.

Yeah, no if ands or buts... this is a significant winter storm now. This could be the largest widespread 12"+ storm of the season up here.

As I somberly watched out the window this afternoon and saw the snow melting away, I decided to bring up my GRLEVEL 3 radar to watch the progress of the storm and saw I am under a flood watch and a winter weather advisory. I believe that is the first time I have experienced these two opposing NWS statements at the same time.

My high for the day was 47.8°F 11:50am. At this time it is 42.1°F and still falling with -RN.

I saw the front move into Lebanon as I came home...right around 3pm, skies darkened, and a downpour ensued, for all of 5 minutes. Then the temp dropped pretty quickly. It was about 47-48 at 3, and now its in the upper 30s. The wind is somewhat gusty right now too. I'm hoping for more snow, and less glaze. We dont need an ice storm.
