Most of it it elevated related....

Sort of. Even the low elevations across a wide area of VT have over 30" on the ground.

It is elevational dependent this time of year just due to build-up from the winter, but the snowpack is pretty impressive even in the lower elevations in VT.

baldwin mills its about 10 miles outside coaticook.. lac lyster to be specific its just weird

thats crazy......isnt he in some smaller town in the eastern townships?

im pretty sure they would be snowed in as there is a state of emergency for the townships in effect.....and it will take some time to all the roads cleared of the 2-3 feet of snow that fell.

they are still working on getting people out of the residential areas of sherbrooke as of this morning, though they said the main roads in sherbrooke have now been cleared.

Some pics... awesome day in NNE.

Base camp.

Down in town, we might be able to bury the entire fence, posts and all, if we get some snow on the front end of this next system... before the rain mats it down. Traversing the background of this photo is the cavern the West Branch left in the ice and snowpack during the rain/warmth prior to the big snow when the river thawed out.

Still buried at the Notchbrook General Store.

My 21-22" bullseye SW of Lake Winni shows up well on that map.

This shows how SNE is full of popcorn spots not general like that map, pretty cool visible.

my dad just made it home!! he said he took ten measurementsbut doesnt know how accurate they were because everything blew around so much they ranged from 42 to 51 inches he lost cell service and thats why he didnt call.. showed me a few pics one of the snow drifts off the lake has to be atleast 20 feet he said i never seen anything like it even up there.. WOW backroads all the way to the border was one lane only they had to use one of the huge snowblowers up there that they have to get rid of it amazing machines if you ever seen them.. he just got a new truck a few weeks ago and rip off a plastic piece under the truck when he had to try andmove over for a car but he said it was well worth it what a trip for him by the way the average snow depth is about 6 to 8 feet now wow also he had some great pictures of the ice on the trees coming down 91 just north of white river they are on his cell phone just have to figure out how to get them on here!! eastern townships at 1800 feet is the real gods country

Good news....that's an awesome area for snow. I've spent some time in NE Quebec and they just get hammered. Ever been to Sept-Iles?

ineedsnow--glad to hear your pop made it back safe & sound....

The end of the Euro is a torch for the eastern 2/3 of the US. 2m temps reach the 80s up into SD.

Well, we'll get spring over with early this year and then settle into some low clouds and drizzle for summer. ;)

5F this morning here but it very much has that late-winter sense to it and a cold morning feels brief and ephemeral. Looks like a nice day on tap before a return to the more unsettled.

This is very true... my college girlfriend had family that lived up there in Derby, VT on the border and we'd always go up into Canada there. Those communities are awesome and it is just beautiful country.

Given how much snow we have around here, I can't imagine what it must look like up there!

I noticed that, too. It was 2F at my house at 800ft and 7F up here at 1,500ft base of ski resort. It struck me how late in the season we are getting all the sudden when I noticed the first rays of light coming over the Worcester Range at 5:45am.

Some big snowpack out there... here's BTV's "snow on ground" listing.

It's gonna be interesting when all this deep snow starts to let go over the next month. Lots of water locked up.

I've been thinking of doing a core to see what the snow/water equivelent is here--maybe 6" or more...?

Yeah I'm very curious as well. I've been talking with Greg Hanson, the senior hydrologist at WFO BTV, because we are going to try and do liquid measurements next year off our snow boards... but for this spring he's trying to get us an Adirondack Snow Sampler so we can give him some liquid equivalents at our snow study areas. He said they gave all there's out UVM and Lyndon State geography/met students so they can do an analysis for a school project. I've seen some of those kids out on Mansfield so I'm hoping to get my hands on their data.

Next season we are going to do a bi-weekly snowpack assessment for BTV but I'd like to try it out this spring just because we have such a solid snowpack (ranging from 40" to 90", bottom to top) that has got to have a lot of liquid in it.

Hopefully all of this releases slowly because even the lowlands io the Champlain Valley have over 30" on the ground.

Sounds good--it's another step in the whole process (melting down, that is) but quite interesting and good info to add to the records.

OK, just took a core. It's going to take a looooong time to for that stuff to melt. Probably won't be able to measure till tonight when I get home but I'm curious to see.

Headed out for a little ski before work in the meantime.....:ski:

Man, yesterday must've been one of the best ski days of the year and I missed it!

freezing fog last night? watched the sun come over the hill this morning, everything was crystalized, stunning. -5F

Some pics... awesome day in NNE.

Thanks for all the great pictures Scott, absolutely agree about the day. Started off clear and cold with single digits, and went right into clear and warm at around 30 F. I was up skiing with Dylan at Stowe yesterday and it was a great one to be out.

08MAR11B.jpg

BTV has their storm total summary out, and I hadn't seen it posted yet so I've added it below. The highest listing on there for snowfall is 3 SW Jay at 34.0", and for snowpack it’s Mt Mansfield at 90.0” of course, but there is also Jay Peak at 78.0”, then 4 N Walden at 49.0”. In our neck of the woods in Washington County we’re 3 NW Waterbury, and it looks like there were several Waterbury sites right in that 2-foot accumulation range like us. It is interesting to note that the other two Waterbury sites listed in the snowpack section of the table, which are both NE of town, had notably lower values for snowpack. Those spots would be much more removed from the spine, so I’m sure our location gets a lot more upslope snow, but as we discussed earlier in one of the threads, that doesn’t really amount to much in terms of snowpack building. The discrepancy certainly wasn’t from this synoptic event with those sites receiving 22.2” and 24.2” of snow, so it must have been in the past with another event or it could have been during consolidation during one of the warm spells.

Some big snowpack out there... here's BTV's "snow on ground" listing.

LOL, looks like you posted that while I wasn't looking, but I threw in the whole snowfall/snowpack table and image from BTV, seemed like a good one to have in the archives (hopefully American won't go the same way Eastern went - is there any way to access all that data from before?). I'm wondering if BTV can reconfigure their snow total graphic to have a slightly higher scale that discriminates beyond 24 inches. It would be nice to see where some of the top end amounts were localized, but with this event especially the northern part of the state is almost entirely in the 24"+ color.

Thanks for all the great pictures Scott, absolutely agree about the day. Started off clear and cold with single digits, and went right into clear and warm at around 30 F. I was up skiing with Dylan at Stowe yesterday and it was a great one to be out.

That's an awesome shot! You wouldn't happen to have that photo without the caption at the bottom? Maybe I can get that up on the website today.

Yes, noticing that on my commute. Gets pretty depressing in-town Portland. But that's how it always is in March - patchy crap at the shore, nice cover inland.

Some of the fields around here are under 6". I think after the flood on Friday, we'll have some bare fields, which is alright by me because it's getting closer to turkey time . . .
