Who needs to walk on water...

Recommended Posts

I posted this pic a few days ago..heavy rain fell on Feb 27/28 (how ironic that the 2nd snowiest Feb, 3rd snowiest month on record ends with winters only real rainstorm?). Over an inch of cold rain fell and soaked into the snowpack, leaving dawn of March 1st an icy one.

Well anyway, after some cold nights the snow is really frozen. Avg depth is about 4", and I stepped on top of the 4" pack with all my weight, this is as far as I sunk in. This is with pressing down hard on my foot too lol. Its not every winter you can literally walk on top of snow!

So we had a heavy 16" snowpack get torched away Feb 17-19, then quickly replaced by a 10" snowstorm, a 4" snowstorm, a 1" rainstorm and now heavy rain and more snow in the forecast. This cant be good for hydro! Im curious how walkable/hard the snow is in parts of NE that got hammered with all the freeze/thaw/rain/snow cycles. We had a deep snowcover that was totally torched away Feb 17-19 before a new deep blanket was quickly layed down. But i know much of NE didnt lose the entire pack to the torch. So I ask...can you walk on the snow out there as well?

In January 2008, I was able to drive my empty 27,500 lb dump truck on top of the snow at a quarry we hauled out of. We had about 3 inches of snow/sleet that turned into rain one weekend, and since the haul road wasn't plowed, it froze into a "concrete slab".

:lmao: Wow that is crazy. Ive heard from many that sleetpack can be just insanely hard, but I never really have had that in my memory here. We will just get some sleet mixed with snow or rain or whatever, but sleet is never the dominant precip type. The NAM actually was giving us our first sleet storm in any of my recollection back Feb 20/21 (1.25" qpf ice pellets) but it ended up almost all snow, 10 inches of it. Trust me if those are the results, I can definitely wait for sleet . Still be cool to see though.

I've been able to walk on snow, but under different circumstances.

Back in January 2004, we had about 6" of snow, with about 1" of freezing rain that fell on top of it. It was thick enough that I could walk on top of the ice on top of the snow without breaking through, if I was careful enough.

Last Jan/early Feb we had a cold rain storm followed by one of the biggest ice storms of the past decade on top of our 20" of snowpack--you could walk on it without even leaving a footprint when the temps dipped into the teens the next day.

Wow. Interesting!

Weve been in a very snowy pattern for several years, but we just cant seem to get an ice storm. We will get a glaze here and there, and sometimes sleet mixes with snow (or rain), but i dont think Ive had a real ICE STORM since 2003, and dont ever recall a sleet storm. Even Feb 20th, they were scaring everyone harping "ice storm", yet with ended up with 10" of snow, with a few hours of snow/sleet mix in the latter third of the storm. Mind you im NOT complaining AT ALL, any snow is better than ice anyway anyday (esp when you only expect 1-2" and get 10" :) )....just saying an ice storm would be interesting.
