Harry
Yes i know one was done for Chicago and another for Detroit but i wanna do a more regional thread for all the records etc that have fallen since 2000 for everyone. Will make looking up this stuff alot easier. Try annd keep it to top 10 for now anyways. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ For here.. I'll add to this later ( totals etc ) when i get more time. For now i'll mainly do the #1 records that have been broke. Snowiest Calendar year record was broke in 2000 but got beat again in 2008. Thus the top 2 now have been had since 2000! Seasonal stuff. 00-01, 01-02, 07-08, 08-09 all place in the top 5 with 08-09 being the snowiest ever. Still unsure if 07-08 *officially* beat out 66-67 though so 1966-67 is either # 2 or #3 for snowiest ever. And yeah i know about 06-07 ( Per GRR this would be #2 ) but i still call BS on that high amount recorded at BTL. First time ever there has been more then 3 above normal snowfall seasons in a row. Current stretch is 4. Snowiest months.. #1 Oct 2006, Snowiest Oct ever #1 Nov 2000, Snowiest Nov ever #1 Dec 2000, Snowiest Dec ever as well as the snowiest month ever. #1 Jan 2009, Snowiest Jan ever and #2 or 3 for snowiest month ever. #1 Feb 2010, Snowiest Feb ever. Snow storms Biggest Oct snowstorm in Oct 2006 Biggest Feb snowstorm in Feb 2010 which got beat again this past Feb with the Blizzard. Unsure about Nov though as Nov 2000 could have this? I'll have to double check. First time there has been a 12+ event 4 winters in a row. This however is based on modern 1948-49 - current records. Don't have individual event details YET prior to that for this location. Also there is some missing data throughout this stations history as well so this could change. For the decade as a whole ( 2000-2009 ) it has the most 12+ events of any decade going back to 1950. The snowiest back to back winters. Actually 07-08/08-09 is #1 and 00-01/01-02 is #2 as far as this goes. Snowiest decade ( 2000-2009 ) of any going back to 1900. Non official and i say it because the period between 1970 and 1979 is in question ( missing data ) still and so this could be slightly off but anyways.. Prior to 2000 back to 1900 no Decade had more then one season in each of them with 80+ and the period between 2000-01 and 2009-2010 saw it happen 5 times. Another achievement here was breaking through the "seasonal" 100+" barrier in 08-09 and 100+" in a Calender year in both 2000 and 2008. Oddball stat. 2006-07 was the only season on record ( Modern records ) to go over 50 on the season without a single snowfall warning criteria event and or failed to exceed 8" inches. The ugly. March 2009/2010 is the first time in modern records less then a inch fell back to back and or two March's in a row. So yes it has been a epic stretch and why i know it could have been alot worse. Yes the epic storms have somehow managed to avoid here but regardless it has been a great period if you like snow. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Fell free to add your town/nearest reporting station to this. michsnowfreak
Good idea Harry! While we can still keep the Chicago/Detroit threads going for local updates and what not, I say we should add the data here as well. Would make a great all-encompassing thread. It can be updated not only as more records fall but also as we perhaps find some new stats to add! When you are in snowy times such as these, sometimes you get so caught up in the straight stats/data/rankings, you miss little gems that youll stumble across later. Like for instance I already found one. For snowcover, the main stat is 1"+ snowcover days. Well, DTW is at 74 days and counting, and Im watching that daily. But I notice that 56 of those days had 5"+, which since normal for a winter is 15 days of 5"+ (per nowdata), thats like 400% of normal! Anyway, heres Detroit and Im sure Chicagowx or someone else can add Chicago DETROITS SNOW RECORD BONANZA…2000-present (records began 1880): 2010-11 snow records watch: THRU MARCH 3rd: 1”+ snowcover days: 74 days (11th place for whitest winter since 1908) season snowfall: 58.9” (16th place and counting for snowiest winter since 1880) NOTE: 56 days have had 5"+ snowcover this season...normal for entire season is 15 days!!!! SNOWIEST BACK-TO-BACK WINTERS ON RECORD 2007-08 + 2008-09 = 137.4” (beat 1898-99 + 1899-00 by 8.1”) 2000-09: 16 storms officially dropped 6”+ snow, most of any decade (note 2000-2011 so far have seen 21 such storms) SIX calendar months saw 21”+ of snow in LESS THAN THREE YEARS (Mar 2008-Feb 2011). Compare this to the fact that only 30 calendar months from 1880-2007 (128 years) saw 20”+. FEBRUARY 2011: 31.7” of snow. One of only 4 months to top 30”+, and the 3rd snowiest month on record. Also only the 2nd time on record two (or more) storms of 10”+ occurred in the same month. STAGGERING FEAT: As long as 2010-11 gets another 1.1”+ snowfall, it will be the FIFTH WINTER IN THE PAST NINE YEARS to hit 60”+ snowfall. In the 122 years prior, only 10 winters hit 60”+ Now for the raw data… SNOWIEST WINTERS #04) 71.7” – 2007-08 #08) 65.7” – 2008-09 #09) 63.8” – 2004-05 #12) 60.9” – 2002-03 #16) 58.9” – 2010-11 as of March 2nd…so STAY TUNED SNOWIEST CALENDAR YEARS #01) 82.6” – 2008 #03) 75.3” – 2005 (tie w/ 1974) SNOWIEST OCTOBERS #11) 0.2” – 2006 SNOWIEST DECEMBERS #03) 25.1” – 2000 #06) 21.4” – 2008 #10) 19.8” – 2005 (tie w/ 1975) SNOWIEST JANUARYS #03) 26.9” – 2005 #04) 25.2” – 2009 SNOWIEST FEBRUARYS #02) 31.7” – 2011 (***3rd snowiest month on record***) #06) 27.0” – 2010 #07) 24.2” – 2008 #10) 19.2” – 2003 (tie w/ 1988) SNOWIEST MARCHES #04) 21.0” – 2008 (tie w/ 1916) SNOWIEST APRILS #05) 7.4” – 2009 #10) 5.0” – 2003 (tie w/ 1923) #15) 4.3” – 2005 SNOWIEST MAYS #07) 0.1” – 2005 (tie w/ 1954)

I did a similar thread elsewhere just in case. Still kinda bummed that we lost a number of these threads on eastern. My fav was the one we did with ORH involving seasonal snowfall, 6+/10+ events etc.

Peoria achieved that record in only two months from Dec 1st through Ground Hog Day Feb 2nd after the Feb 1-2 blizzard when they were up to 46.6 inches. It beat the old record of 42.5 inches set in 1978-79 winter season by 10 inches, and followed by 41.5 inches set last winter season 2009-10. Peoria had 19.2 inches in December, 12.4 inches in January and 20.9 inches in February. It was the 3rd snowiest December and 2nd snowiest February on record. Peoria is also the snowiest winter (cool season Oct - Apr), surpassing the 51.6 inches received 1978-79 winter by nearly an inch, followed by the 47.1 inches set in 1977-78 winter. baroclinic_instability
You will get no complaining by me. The seasonal total up at MPX is an astounding 80.2" thus far--putting it into the top 10 all-time. It is much more impressive when you consider how bad it has been for so long the previous decade.
