I dont understand this whole snow "issue"

Fact, BDR had only 4.7 inches of snow in Feb but yet we are top 3 snowiest winters overall, and with one march nor'easter, which is not hard to get, 95-96 goes to #2. This has been an epic winter for the south coast, but climo is starting to take hold, big deal, it DOES not erase what happened from Xmas to Feb 7, I mean jesus christ we had continous snowpack for 60 days west of the ct river, ON the shore.

Time to watch Pete play in the snow.

I totally disagree. Climo does not suggest that winter ends on the CT Shoreline in early February. Unfortunately global weather patterns sometimes overrule historical averages. February through the first 10 days of March is historically an extremely active time snow wise for the South Coast and the outer Islands.

But it's an average so some awesome some horrible make climo that's just the way it is.

Todd G. (Gutner, not Gross) on WBZ says bye bye winter for now

A brief shot of Mid-Winter cold will move in tonight ushered in by gusty NW Winds…some serious cold air advection will take place with a near 40 degree temp drop from the high today (48) to the low tomorrow morning! The frigid start will be tough to rebound from, in fact both the GFS and NAM MOS data spit out highs of 21 and 22 respectively! This seems a little low for my liking and we had this problem last week with the models short-changing us with temps. We’ll have full sunshine and a downsloping NW wind so I’m thinking upper 20s for Boston…28. This thinking is supported by the 850mb temp of -13 degrees C. If we can get through tomorrow, we are pretty much set for a week or so…a warming trend begins on Friday with Spring-like temps and conditions for the weekend and beyond. Highs in the 50s over the weekend with a slow-moving rainmaker for the end of the weekend and early next week could deposit well over an inch of rain! Behind the system, a trough will be digging in the West…so we’ll see rising heights and mild air…no prolonged Winter weather for the first two weeks of March!

Logan Airport averages 43 inches of snow a year. Has there been a winter over the last 30 years where Logan had exactly 43 inches? Average is just a range. Sometimes winter (snow-wise) ends in early February on the south coast, a few winters every ten years it never really begins. That's what makes it fun because we never really know what to expect .

DT does deserve credit for recogizning the pattern change before most folks....but he really busted for eastern NE with that norlun trough that hammered most of CT except Ginx.

Man a wintery drive out from Boston to Webster tonight. HIt a nice graupel snow squall on 93 near the ray exit...Occassional squalls all the way to Concord. My back roads were partially snow covered, crazy blowing snow actually due to the crust on top of the ice. Had 1-2 inches, impossible to measure at home. What a mid-winter scene here...snow cleaned up, temp of 15 and plunging, windchills below zero and 32" at the stake. Big Winter Incoming and Ongoing.

Pete B. on WHDH also not into winter mode...

Plan on a tough go of it in the morning with subzero wind chills, single digit temperatures, and maybe some slick sidewalks where the water refreezes from today's meltdown. I said it on-air this afternoon, and I truly believe it. This may be the final arctic assault we see of the season. Sure, there will still be those cold mornings where we see single digits in the suburbs, but as far as howling wind, windchills in the -5° to -15° range, and highs struggling to get into the 20s, I think those days are over. Especially with the pattern in the next 7-10 days. The warmup surging across the Plains and the South will spill into New England by the weekend, and our temperatures are heading WAY up. Worries include a quick meltdown and some drenching rain by Sunday night and Monday. Could spell flooding, but we'll have to wait and see how it all plays out. Hopefully, there's a reprieve between rainy episodes, or maybe the storm won't be as juicy as we seeing now.

What did you get in '06-07?

Yeah, I was wondering if he even broke double digits. My mom had pretty close to nothing that winter in Jamestown RI. Maybe 10" if that.

The interior made a pretty good come back in Feb and Mar that season but the historically awful Dec/Jan combo was too much to overcome. But getting around 50" of snow for the season I actually consider a bit of an accomplishment as through Feb 1st, we had 5.0" on the season....5.0" Not a typo. Lowest on record through Feb 1st here including back to the late 1800s when they kept records at a diff (less snowy) spot. That was also the last winter we had measurable snowfall in April believe it or not. Been in an April/November drought (and March actually). Haven't had any problems with Dec/Jan/Feb though in the last few years.

Read a couple of pretty good research papers on March snows in Maine and the lack thereof this decade while in me sick bed. Pretty strong linear fall.

Folks were golfing Holden CC in mid-Jan.

And I do remember the April snow.

We just need some good mid-March crocus crushers. I'm just happy I beat last year (finally). Tonight was fun

I had 13 inches in 2006-2007. But 4 inches fell in one single event one morning and it all melted within three hours. 2007-2008 for Newport was really bad. The back to back December events were primarily sleet and in one big SE MA storm I was too far west in January and only had two inches. So in 2007-2008 I don't believe I had anything more than 15 inches.

Ginx, I remember you saying you had two inches during that norlun trough event that hammered interior SW CT and dumped 10 on New Haven.....DT was calling for 8-12 for all of SNE and the accumulating snows basically stopped at URI.

I was in Pittsburgh most of today. No question about snow cover there....none to be found other than the odd tiny pile of left overs.

Went to college there 1970-1974 Duquesne University. Biggest storm was on Valentine's day either 71 or 72 maybe 8 inches tops in the city. Warm air seems to flood through there up the Ohio River Valley changing snow to rain quite quickly. Good times there for all 4 years climo notwithstanding.

Oh that one where East and West of me cashed in, the one where some places had back to back and belly to belly Norluns, you know the ones only Maine gets.

I've had thew 2005-2006 map half done for about a year, and haven't gotten around to finishing it, but here is 2007-2008

20072008snesnowfall.png

Thanks Will. What a horrible winter for the south coast. New Bedford on east did a lot better because of a big event that dumped 9-12 inches that spared just about the entire area if my memory serves me correctly. It's funny...when I was a kid I could remember just about every snow event no matter how small. But in some winters including recent ones the events get real fuzzy.
