MARCH

Mr Torchey

Recommended Posts

Just got crushed with a squall... visibility was measured in feet, not miles. Just over 1" down and the squall line should be pushing in shortly.

Riding the gondola with Weir Lundstedt and Tim Kelley... all three of us weenies are having a blast watching this progress. Winds ramping up, sky just started pouring half dollar sized flakes again. Weir was worried about relative humidity in the boundary level but it looks like we are making out ok. Ive got Weir's 1993 WINDEX paper on my lap, Tim's got his phone out, Weirs looking at on his phone at lightning strikes east of Lake Ontario and loving the instability... good stuff.

My co-worker spoke with Weir because she did her thesis on the Dec 2003 snowsquall event that snarled traffic in the Boston area.

winter is pretty much done

http://www.meteo.psu...nsloopmref.html

notice how the above normal height anomalies keep appearing over the eastern US below the huge vortex over greenland

Doesn't necessarily mean we are done because the wave lengths shorten once beyond the first half of March, but it would take some luck.

Wow man I don't know either of you personally at all besides what people are posting but objectively here, you are way out of line. Who are you to judge ray?

I like most, am far from perfect and have some skeleton's in my closet, but that reference was highly inappropriate in the context of this forum....all I meant.

I'm sure this never would have taken place in person....conflicts occur more frequently and with more fervor under the constraints of an impersonal method of communication like this.

SE MA is getting a sneaky "mini torch" today. Upper 40s showing up.

38F here and waiting for some good squalls. It has been overcast for like 2 hours now so that helped stopped the quick warmup after we shot up during the morning hours.

Yeah it's mild...and as a result now very very windy

I disagree with all the Forky Fork bashing. Sometimes the truth hurts and the conclusion to this winter may end up 1997-1998 esque even though I don't expect any Bermuda Highs giving Boston 90 degree temps on March 30th. He's been right. And for those of you who have had "substantial" snow events post Feb. 2.....they haven't been big events for the impressive snow standards that are synonomous with northern MA and Worcester County in February. I just checked the grass. It's not fully brown or dead, nor is it fully green. But there are certainly some green areas.

If there were ever a season to EXPECT an April\May bomb, this season is it because I could see t winter's propensity for deep systems reasserting itself by means of an April 1996 or even a May 1977; obviously higher terrain would be favored, but lower elevations could definitely share in the fun....especially towards ne MA.

Come hell or high mashed potatoes, this season is not done it's prolific character will manifest itself in the form of late season romp and perhaps even a literal tulip-trouncer.

Just a hunch and yes it looks like I may have off RE March, so take it for what it's worth, but I was right overall in that this winter didn't blow.

Winter ended there already, but its been almost dead on climo (temps too) for BOS/ORH and surrounding areas to the north the final 3 weeks of February. So you could quite accurately say "winter has continued at an average pace" in those 3 weeks. It simply didn't continue at the obscene break neck pace that was happening in January.

BTW, 1998 had a decent cold powdery snow event on Mar 22-23.

I get along with him rather well and talk to him on FB a fair amount.....I perceive him as often being a bit to zealous in his haste to impart the "truth" on folks who don't want to hear it.

Yea dude, more power to you for pulling through such a terrible incident and manning up about it to make yourself better. I don't really think anyone has a right to judge someone else the way BIrving was doing on here.

I hope to find some time to make it to one of the GTGs over the next couple months, it's nice to have a good community of fellow weather enthusiasts.

It's not so much about whether or not it's true it's more a question of him coming on here and ONLY posting about winter being over. If he lived in the region and/or gave his opinion on all weather I wouldn't really care much. But all the dude does is come and post about either winter being over, less snow occuring, or generally poorly performing winter events in SNE.

Certainly right on this part... but winter certainly did not die up by me... just sorta wimped out wrt snow. Cold has been there overall, and there has been near normal snow.

Just no big blue bomber... yet

BOS for the final 3 weeks of February was -0.7F for temp departure and had 8.1" of snow (climo is 8.5")...can't get any more "Average" than that really for temp/snow combo to finish the month off. It was done in roller coaster fashion which helped destroy the snow pack there, but overall it was a pretty average final 3 weeks of the month when you crunch the numbers.

I can recall him dropping in and posting in anticipation of some of the big snow storms, but it was usually after many had retired.......I can remember him telling us that we'd enjoy it based on what he had observed.

Yeah I can't complain with February. It started off nice, and that last snow provided a nice finish. I suppose I may have the right to complain about the snow dissolving, but that's gonna happen given where I live. I'll be more disappointed if March craps the bed yet again.
