...MID ATLANTIC REGION THROUGH THIS EVENING...

VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY AND SURFACE OBSERVATIONS SUGGEST THAT

SUBSTANTIAL SURFACE HEATING WILL OCCUR E OF THE APPALACHIANS TODAY

IN ADVANCE OF THE PRE-FRONTAL SQUALL LINE. THIS HEATING...COMBINED

WITH BOUNDARY LAYER DEWPOINTS OF 55-60 F...WILL SUPPORT STEEPENING

LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND SUFFICIENT SURFACE-BASED INSTABILITY TO

RESULT IN REJUVENATION OF THE SQUALL LINE E OF THE MOUNTAINS THIS

AFTERNOON/EVENING. AT THE SAME TIME...DEEP-LAYER WINDS WILL

INCREASE WITH THE APPROACH OF THE MIDLEVEL WAVE...AND VERTICAL SHEAR

WILL REMAIN STRONG. THE ENVIRONMENT WILL SUPPORT THE MAINTENANCE OF

A PRIMARILY LINEAR CONVECTIVE SYSTEM FROM NC NWD INTO THE MID

ATLANTIC...WHERE DAMAGING WINDS AND A COUPLE OF QLCS TORNADOES WILL

BE THE PRIMARY SEVERE THREATS.

Just landed at DCA. Was on an E170 from Omaha and flew right through what is headed our way. Lots of white knuckles all around. Flight attendant said it was her worst flight in five years.

Indeed - I live on the flight path to DCA's southern approach and just saw two jets do some interesting acrobatics to get ahead of the incoming squall line, as well as avoid each other. Currently holding at 72 degrees, NW winds 2-3 mph (w/ higher gusts increasing), with clouds lowering quickly...
