My point was that too many times people declare snow to be done with for the season when it can come back quickly...whether it's less than an inch or more.

What gets on my nerves is when people do that and post NOTHING ( no meteorological reasoning ) to back their claim. Doesn't matter what season it is either. That kind of weenie crap needs to stop in this forum. It has gotten beyond old.

And sorry but saying oh it is late March, April or whatever is not it either. Learn your god damn climo and thus look at the climo data for where you live.

Whenever anyone says no more snow at this point, I bring up April of 2005. Personally I am fine if it doesn't snow again but I also know that it can happen.

Going to school and then living in ND for a time--I learned you never discount snow threats until June. I have indeed see the snow fly (and accumulate) in June!

Ah, I remember watching TWC a couple years ago in june and there was snow in the plains somewhere.

The lost summer of 2009 :/

Worst spring/early summer of my life. Grand Forks kept getting the shaft and we didn't hit 80 until the very end of June. Fargo hit 80 (about 65 miles S of GFK) a good 4-6 times but we always got FROPA'd right before we would hit max temp. It was a psychological blow. Yeah I love winter weather--but long winters in ND can wear you out--and the work load at the private company I worked at in winter resulted in a longing for warmer weather by the spring months. Dickinson, ND is prolly what you are thinking about--they recorded 4" in June that year.

I *believe* the latest recorded trace or more of snowfall in this area is the 19th of May? Latest 6+ event is May 9th/10 for here. That May 9/10th system dropped over a foot in some areas close to here just east/ne such as Lansing who got 13.5 from it.

I don't *think* there has been any snow in central/southern Michigan in June? That would be freaky to see snow in June.

*EDIT*

Lansings latest recorded snow is May 25th i *think*.

Southwest Lower Michigan Weather History

The Weather History for May 25th

5/25/1925

Lansing records its latest snow on record as snowflakes fall there with a low temperature of 32 and a high of 47 degrees

Snow flurries are observed across Lower Michigan as record cold air moves in. Temperatures fall well below freezing the next morning, wiping out much of the fruit crop.

Grand Rapids it is May 27th.

Southwest Lower Michigan Weather History

The Weather History for May 27th

5/27/1907

Wet snowflakes fall at Grand Rapids and Muskegon. It is the latest snow on record at Grand Rapids.

Muskegon is May 29th.

Southwest Lower Michigan Weather History

The Weather History for May 29th

5/29/1895

The second heat wave of the month gets underway with record highs of 94 degrees at Grand Rapids and Lansing.

Weird is probably the only thing I can say seeing snow in June. I do love spring storms though--they represent their own forecasting challenge. The "snow island" CSNavywx mentioned in a different thread earlier is a good example. So hard to forecast when everything is dependent on where the snowpack from the previous storm resides--and when precip rates largely dictate the type. I have had plenty of busts both ways resulting from these challenges.

See my edit.

And yeah Spring storms ( snow storms ) are basically a different beast. They can be a real pain/very challenging to forecast but the awesome potential with them makes up for it.

I always think of April 82 and or the record snowfall/snowstorm holder for Detroit in early April. Ofcourse as my last post shows nobody is safe from flakes in these parts till late May.

It kinda makes sense if you think about my post earlier about the normals here vs DC. As said we are right at what would be considered mid winter for DC as far as our normal highs and lows go. Even they have had accumulating snow well into April. What is cool is you can do the same with the record lows etc as they are comparable as well as it can still get down to below zero in these parts all the way into Early/Mid April vs late Feb/early March there. Lansings latest 0 or below is April 17th. Coldest April temp there is -6 during that April 82 record setting cold and snow. Unsure about anyone else but temps in the teens and lower is winter to me.

Damn.. Missed the record high today by 1. High was 70 here at KBTL.

I love how people say that snow is over and they live in Michigan. Even in Kentucky, we have seen accumulating snow in early April. And my Dad said there was snow flurries on Derby Day on the year I was born. That's the first Saturday in May! Average high is up to 61 now in Murray and 58 in Louisville. I would compare our climate right now to the Macon, Ga area in early February. They have seen decent size snowstorms. There's no way Michigan is done with snow. The Negative A/O is tanking and plenty of cold air to come down out of Canada. Local meteorologists have said their is a small potential of light snow shower or flurry next week.

When you mention DC's late winter (compared to our's), I think anecdotally of the many newspaper pictures of snow covering the cherry blossoms I've seen through the years.

Agreed. Snow is not done. By looking at the long range we have at least one more in the pipeline. April 24-26th 2005 16" fell in Northern Oakland, 2008 7" fell on April 3-4th, Massive 4 day Ice storm followed by 4-5 inches of snow event on April 3-8th 2003...etc I never say winters done until May. Even in May Ive seen snowfall but thats extremely rare

Thank you! Great post!

Yesterday was a sort of surreal feeling. The high was 68 degrees, and it smelled like a summer evening. Almost all piles in residential areas are gone (save for a few) but still have the plowed snowbanks in parking lots. I remember sitting at a red light yesterday, window wide open, felt like a summer evening, and looking in the parking lot to see leaking but still very noticeable snowbanks and it was just a weird feeling. Not that the dead grass and bare trees signal a look of summer, but it just has a really weird feel yesterday. Yes, winter from a constant cold/snowcover perspective is done (and its been a great one for that), but snow? No way.

Detroit stilll averages 4.5" more after March 18th. How does 24.5" on April 6, 1886 sound? Or 6" on May 9, 1923? Or even 5" on May 21/22, 1883, which is Detroits latest snowstorm on record. I mean come on, thats over TWO MONTHS later than this! Latest snow was May 31, 1910 (T).

Cool your temper Harry. Grow up & Relax

I love when people try and use this stuff for some deflection.

My temper is fine. ;) You are the one who might have a little growing up to do though with making such statements as you did and then trying to pull this to try and weasel your way out of it. Just don't make them and people wont say anything. And believe me i am not the only one who is tired of seeing this forum overrun with such stuff. Take note of other replies. This is not accuwx forums and most here don't want that stuff ( type of posting/weenie casting ) here either. Notice i did not say anything to cromartie/tropical either other then a rebuttal. Wanna know why? He offered some reasoning for his post. Do that and all will be good and everyone will get along greatly. That is all most ask for in here. Understand? :)

We had a widespread snow storm of 3-5 inches of snow in April of 2007 in Kentucky. It was during our spring break and I was the crazy freak that loved it. Nothing better than drunk sledding during spring break while everyone else was complaining and drinking their sorrows away. I believe something like that happens once every 10-15 years. Wouldn't mind seeing another freak event like that this year.

One thing I will say about Harry, he is real and wil tell it like it is. You better watch out when he gets on a roll.

That said, some of the trees are already budding/popping out here.

Yeah, my tree went from zero budding to large fuzzy buds in a day...amazing how quickly trees an react to warm temps.

:devilsmiley::weight_lift:

Have not noticed any budding yet around here.

BTW.. The GOM is recovering nicely. Actually a nice expanding area of above normal SSTs down there. Some very decent warming as of late with 70+ SSTs making a run towards the coast and a fast growing area of 75+ SSTs from just west of Tampa to south of New Orleans down to Cuba/s.FL etc. That is some very nice juice. Now if we can get things to come together.

Perhaps someone can share their opinion on the weekly long range euro and how accurate or unaccurate it is, but for the severe lovers out there looks like a spring cancel going into mid april, looks very cold, and blah for the GL areas. God I hope not, be nice to track some squall lines and smell the carbon in the air from incoming storms. Wow this spring looks to be going into the crapper and fast.

Part two:

I just looked at the NAO-AO-PNA and the NAO looks to trend to neutral alightly positive, the AO rages positive and the PNA after trending neutral looks to go positive fairly strongly. Wouldn't that be considered a warm signal? I heard last year the indicies were negative yet it was warmer....not sure how to interpret the data, but it looks like a "warmer" signal. Any help would be appreciated.
