Huge snowstorm surprises, buries, metro-Detroit

Recommended Posts

The Feb 20/21, 2011 snowstorm was an awesome storm, probably one of my favorites for a few reasons:

BUST: Expected 1-3" of snow followed by ice, ended up with 10.2" of snow. Best bust ever (this is just 2 weeks after a partly sunny turned 4.1" snow bust occurred).

THUNDERSNOW/RATES: I was on a very familiar road and was disoriented, I didnt know where on the road I was because I could see nothing. First time its ever happened to me. As I was driving, a massive lightning strike/thunder boom was observed. The 7pm obs at DTW was "Heavy Thunderstorms, Heavy Snow, Freezing Fog..visib 0.06 mile".

We only had to deal with 2 days of bare ground after the torch!

Awesome pictures...it was a great system for Wisconsin and Michigan. I had 8" from the storm here in the NYC suburbs, great dendrites that accumulated nicely over a period of about 6 hours.

Thanks, yeah it totally brought winter back with a vengeance after leaving us for a few torchy days. The snowpack was loosened up Feb 13-14th then torched away Feb 16-19th. Cant complain as it had been a very persistently cold winter, but looking back, all I can say is "what if" when dreaming of snow depths had that torch not occurred (then some might argue, had the torch not happened, this storm may not have either).

The dry winter nip in the air this morning, with fresh deep white and blue sky....made me forget its late February and I need to worry about sun angle. Felt like the dead of winter at its finest.

Your win meant our loss  congrats on the snow though.. Just wish it could have been a more widespread moderate snowfall.
