Going forward into March

CoastalWx

Recommended Posts

Just yesterday Will and Scooter were both posting how they loved the pattern going forward and felt strongly that the first week of March would have very cold air over New England. Will posted he felt very good about it.

Now for some reason today because we have a tainter coming up..followed by a nice advisory snowfall over the weekend and then possibly another tainter..folks are upset and longing for spring, mud season, and 24 hour man holding hands athons

I don't understand what happened to folks. Yesterday there was so much enthusiasm for more winter..and today many are acting just like birvine

I wouldn't go that far...I'll bet alot of the best winter had a 3 week stretch in which I only saw 4.5".

Jan 13- Feb 3 1996 saw 8" IMBY..Feb 3-Feb 24 saw 9"

The current 3 week stretch is worse than either of those, but I think I'll see more than 17" during this aggregate 6 week period.......need 12" in 3 weeks and should grab a couple on Sunday.

Well, my post was made in a hypothetical sense...as in if we don't turn it around quickly in March, but I still think that we do.

If i were a betting man I'd say 12" is going to be a tough climb unless most of it comes in one shot. We shall see.

Aside of nanook of the north im not sure this a good pattern for sne unless you like 2" in 3 weeks.

You haven't missed a beat.....you could go into the NNE thread an talk to yourself :lol:

I really love Winter. I just dread the heat of summer. Even now Kevin is preparing his inflammatory torch/dewpoint posts. The mere thought of the blistering heat of a 75 degree day in July makes my skin crawl. Month after interminable month just waiting for Winter's return is too much to bear. To think that some people are wishing for Winter's demise turns my stomach. The world is full of twisted individuals.

That 6 week stretch spoiled a lot of people so for a lot of people, we break in the pattern seems like something ridiculous and unbearable. This last 3 weeks has been pretty bleh, but I'm with you on that we are not done by any means yet. We can see how close some of these events are going to be...likely going forward more and more as the EPO makes the cold push tot he south. There' potential for an east based NAO block for a while in the first week of March.

Will, East Based NAO is better than a positive NAO, of course, but I think it might be no good down here in the NYC area, but we'll see.

Kev says you wouldn't find 75 so hot if you trimmed the hair.

I don't think anything has changed. We outlined the good and bad. It's just too early to tell, but it's not like I see this.... yikes.png

However, you just made the points of many. Tainter, then snow, then possible tainter. I accept the fact it's hard for snowpack retention here, but some just hate getting snow, then followed by rain. Right now, I'm all about numbers.

I certainly don't think people should be down in the dumps. I'm hopeful...cautious but hopeful.

We have a lot of very snowy periods on the analogs out in early March....1972, 1967, 1960 all on there and didn't need huge NAO blocks..just goes to show that it can be boom or bust without the -NAO but favorable EPO....those months probably popped PNA positive...or at least western ridge came back briefly.Though Mar '60 had a -pna.

Lol..I can't stop laughing. Awesome post

I'm serious. When I first joined over at Eastern I would explore the different region's threads and was always happy to be a New Englander when I would see what a sh*t show the other threads were.Winter cancel in November, constant pessimism about getting the rain shaft for every storm, all hallmarks of the MA threads but not NE. Now, like a blight, it infiltrates our once noble threads. I spit with contempt for these faux snow lovers.

I would feel better even with weak blocking...just to shove the se ridge a little more out into the Atlantic. It's going to make some lose their hair prematurely, because I could see some nasty shifts in models from 7 days out. I doubt what we are seeing Friday, is the last of these events where we have model havoc.

I hope the hints at ridging in the SW are indeed real. That makes me hopeful for at least trying to beat down the ridge. I'm just not sure if that is a stable feature in this pattern...probably not. Maybe it's transient.

Those were some impressive analogs even down here (March 1960 and 1967), but did March 1960 really have a -PNA for the month? because that truly is amazing because that month basically speaks for itself for the Northeast region.

'72 =42.50"

'67= 30.50"

'60= 30.30"

All decent Marches here as per Chesterfield Co-Op.

I must admit as our hockey rink thaws I'm sentimental about what was an epic ice season. At the same time the summer hobbies start to stir, bars beaches and boats

How the little one? I for one will be sad in May when the snow fort and sledding runs I've made with my daughter start to melt. So many hours of fun. I'll always remember hearing her laughter as I pulled her through the SN+ at night during the X-mas miracle storm. What fun this Winter has been.

Im kinda shocked, and confused but then again some areas of new england are doing so much better than others. We down here in the bowels of new england have a great chance to beat the all time snowiest winter. There is a good chance I will never see this much snow again in my lifetime, in fact very good chance. SNowpack is strong, granted we were lucky down here yesterday with the fluff job. But, this almost seems like an addiction to crack for some, never enough, always complaining, hate to tell ya but reality sucks, life sucks often, but this has been a great winter, and every event from now until April 1 is not going to be snow, its going to rain, and ice and sleet, thats reality.

The last ten years have been a blessing snow wise, growing up in the 80's (on the ct coast) sucked. This is not the time of year for snowpack retention unless your in ski country, that time has passed the majority of us. Its going to snow again, perhaps even another ku in March, either way being a snow lover this winter has ****ing rocked and a little practicality is needed, this aint Tahoe.

OT FYI For those in W. Ma and Ct my wife is doing a brief segment on PBS channel 2 WGBY Springfield's Connecting Point in the next half hour on Winter Composting and Worm Composting. They'll give her all of 5 minutes out of 30. It will be on their website by tomorrow.

Hint - She will be the really pregnant one talking about compost.

:)

Brutal! It's like a MASH unit over here. Definitely jades my love of winter right now although temps have nothing to do with sickness obviously.

Yep my kids LOVE winter. But we switch right over to summer mode pretty quickly so long as the weather cooperates like it did last Spring. I'll be sad if this plays out as it's forecast because it will kill the kids hockey rink.

Cuing up the old itunes, anyone remember this?

Gee, thanks Kev - this is one of the few posts my wife has ever seen on this forum. I walk away from the laptop for two minutes and now have days of explaining what actually goes on with this forum and the gtg's.

:axe:

Reminds me of his "Fook the RUC!!" rant at the GTG in ORH.lol

The winter has been great, but these past 3 weeks (AFTER groundhog day) have sucked azz......maybe some folks love it, but the 16" snowpack doesn't do much for me anymore.....it's nasty; better than brown grass, yes.....but we just can't add anything and it's so beat.

i knew you'd be back someday. i kind of missed the old ray. :lol:
