powderfreak
Here in CT damage was pretty minimal. Occasional gusts to advisory criteria. The Berkshires definitely did better. Yeah, I have no idea about damage but just looking at obs there are some good winds in there. It looks like ALY verified some of the high wind warnings which is good for them... usually those things fall short. I generally think damage in wind events in the winter-time is usually quite minimal... no foliage means no real problems except for garbage cans rolling down the street. You have to start seeing widespread 55knot gusts to start cranking up the damage reports I've noticed. A sporadic 50 knot gust here or there doesn't get it done. Most hardwood trees in New England can withstand even 60mph without a problem if there's no foliage on the trees. I really have no opinion on the matter of whether or not this was impressive, lol. Just playing devil's advocate for discussion purposes.

danstorm
HPN just gusted to 50 knots lol In CT I tend to gauge wind events based on the number of power outages. So far we've fluctuated between 5k and 8k which is NBD. Over 20k is notable and 60k or 70k is a legit event. Ah yes, this is the difference between the operational met. and the hobbyist. You have definitive thresholds for things like this - someone like me has no clue. In monetary terms, anyone know how much does it costs a utility to restore 1K in outages? radiator
In monetary terms, anyone know how much does it costs a utility to restore 1K in outages? I doubt that you can make any meaningful estimate of that. AFAIK, outages are reported in terms of customers without electric power, rather than some other kind of metric (such as repair actions required). Depending on the specific cause of an outage, a single failure could result in one customer being without power or thousands of customers without power. Similarly, it may or may not be more expensive to restore one customer's power than it is to restore power to thousands, depending on the specific cause and required fix. I work at a utility, we put away a certain dollar number a year in our budget for storm duty. 1 K is nothing. 250K is a different story

The winds combined witht he snow is what he and the city were concerned about. He told me that most home in GFL were built to withstand 50 mph winds anything prolonged and above that threshold were "disconcerting".

Ice Warrior commander
I gusted to 66 MPH here at 10:40AM on the 19th.. so that KORH ASOS OB of 64 knots might not be that far off the peak gust. I lost some tiles as well and that is pretty rare for me.
free_man
Oh yeah for sure. We can see some nasty high wind events in the winter... this wasn't one of them though. Exactly. The gusts here were probably 50-55 mph max and barely any branches down, nevermind limbs or trees. 55mph is nothing to sneeze at either, but it is still just under HWW Last years Feb 2010 windstorm was COMPLETELY difference scene, with frequent gusts 60-70mph and a few higher. Pockets of extensive tree loss and wires down on most roads. One of my pet peeves are people who during any wind event automatically have to say "HWW"...lol

Tropopause_Fold
I thought it would be typical 50-60 here and not hurricane force, lol. Pretty nice event. lol yeah. unfortunately words just get twisted around here edit: ha! just saw the orh report
ORH_wxman
lol yeah. unfortunately words just get twisted around here edit: ha! just saw the orh report Yeah it actually was hurricane force, lol. That's what I thought was funny. It def overformed here again. I should have known it would. ORH is notorious for overperforming on W/NW flow CAA wind events. But it def did not look like it would be gusting over 70mph.
CoastalWx
lol yeah. unfortunately words just get twisted around here edit: ha! just saw the orh report That's not right is it? I don't buy that. Overall a pretty nice event. I think it was as expected, but those tstms gave areas some added wind. Edit: I saw the HAM report at 63mph, so perhaps. it's just that I would think you'd see more 60-65mph reports from the area. I guess maybe there was some rogue gust or something. CoastalWx
It was 9am in the morning it happened. Yeah I remember seeing the metar. It sticks out like a sore thumb, but ORE gusted to 62 around that time as well. Maybe a weak trough or something came through..or just enough mixing. I didn't believe it at first. Damage In Tolland
Would foks say this was a HWW event? Lots of yard damage

Those are horrendous locations for wind and a W wind event on CAA is very good for ORH to gust high. There actually wasnt a ton of damage around here though...but not surprising since its winter. If that happened with foliage, that would have been bad.
CoastalWx
Would foks say this was a HWW event? Lots of yard damage I think in most areas it was more advisory. However in the morning hours, it behaved like HWW across central areas it seems.
Tropopause_Fold
What's crazy is guidance really backed off on the wind aloft. Had the stuff that was being outputted earlier in the week come to fruition...hvy hvy gusts everywhere.

The gfs had a pulse of really strong stuff coming through just after 12z...corresponded well with the mixing layer starting to stretch after sun up too
