Winter returns with a vengeance thread

Damage In Tolland

Good...would have been BS, anyway...I'm glad that the meteorological Bonds will fall short.

Well I guess some work has been done on correcting a few of the errors, the January event was corrected from 6.6'' to 3.4''...the other error is the Boxing Day Blizzard...which Eleanor said she tried working on last week and the other one is the January 8th event...BDL reported 3.3''...Enfield only had 1.3''.

Yes, there's definitely been a withdrawal from all the tracking we did in December and January. I spent so many hours pouring over computer models, and now it seems there's nothing to do in life, especially since it's not yet time for real outdoor activities like gardening, tennis, hiking etc. Sad how addicted we get, but we do learn a lot in the process.

Yeah the time spent looking over models was just countless...it virtually made the winter zoom by...the learning was fun as well. I don't mind the addiction though...I find it to be really fun and it's not like it's an unhealthy addiction b/c it is all educational stuff.

On the other hand though the down times is great for going back and looking over past events and working on other things, reading, etc. I usually use this time to work on some stuff.

I am not a huge winter sports guy even though I love the snow...I've skied a bunch and snowshoed a few times, as well as hiked some of the big peaks in the Greens and 'Dacks during winter, but it's not a major part of my lifestyle. I might get more into it in the next few years, but I'm most devoted to growing a vegetable garden and playing tennis in terms of outdoor activities, and we still have a couple months before we get to that point.

Play Tennis a lot. Just played last weekend(indoors). Not enough time in the day or days in the week to do all the awesome outdoor sports Winter provides. I wish it was always Winter.

I didn't realize you were a tennis player...I played varsity all four years of HS and took various tennis classes throughout college, but am rusty now. I will get back into the swing of things during the spring, excuse the pun. I don't know if I'd want 12 months of winter but I would like for the climate to become a little colder and snowier, with snow cover all winter and some true arctic shots down here.

Here's the MA snow depth map from earlier this morning...obviously it has a lot of void spaces including my area, but its pretty amazing to see just about everyone over 20" except SE MA.

1daysnowdepth19.gif

There is a sharp line between the haves and have nots. 6-10" near PYM. Double that at my folks house easily, esp in protected spots. I've never seen such a sharp gradient in all my life.

PVD snow cover looks extremely unrepresentative - they had 1" on the ground as of Sun morning, while E. Providence has 9" and Potowomut (about 8 miles south of PVD, right on the water) had 11.5".

Euro has an overrunning snow event getting in here as early as Sunday morning this 00z run.

Storm number 2 looks like it tries coming Monday night but it actually might be too far south. Euro sends the SW trough out in a couple or three separate pieces of energy so it doesn't get overly wound up as a low well west of us. Instead its a couple different SW flow/overrunning type events where the sfc low gets crushed underneath us.

Its a good look for us though to have those type of systems running up the OH River valley with some confluence to the north. Very Dec 2007-esque

Folks are gonna be in for a rude awakening next weekend. Winter just smacks them back to reality after a meh torch

Looks like several nice days at the end of this week before a cooler and more normal regime sets in. In reality, the warmth is above avg and the return to winter for end Feb/early March is "meh", since it will fully be met Spring and highs will be in the 30s.

Met spring has always been a bullsh*t term. Honestly do you ever consider 3/4 a spring day?

Getting the front through overnight Fri/Sat will be nice. The EC has my 850s down to -10C and your 2m temps down to 32F for 12z Sat after the Fri toast.

Yeah Friday will be tough..but it's nice to rip the front thru earlier now..That extra 24 hours makes a huge difference...plus now folks won't be able to get out and enjoy the warmth on Saturday since the warmth is during the week. Nothing worse than a weekend in winter with kids on bikes and folks enjoying warm wx..thankfully we won;t have to see any of that nonsense

Yup. Not done yet. First things first, though, I'm eager to see how the wind situatino plays out later today/night. Looks like some more blustery weather on tap once we eject the late-week warmth.

Wonder when the tree tapping will take place.....

Yeah definitely. Avg highs in the 40s soon, if not now (which seems like a torch after this long, cold winter) and rising quickly. By the time we reach next weekend and "winter returns", the 30s will be below average yet still melting, after the main warmup.

Ask DC how they feel about Met winter ending March 1st. They think it's BS too..only it should be February 16th...;D

Dont' shovel your driveway after a couple of storms and you won't have to worry about that too much. I'm sure I'll be seeing some pavement on mine come Friday though.

Through 2/12, BOS is -3 for the month. -1 yesterday and probably +5 today (should get cold before midnight), -7 tomorrow, normal Wed, then +9 Thurs and +15 Friday. Bottom line, the month looks to finish (considering current progs) below normal. Dec-Feb subnormal, way above normal snow. Can't complain about that!

40s is not a spring day...never was. That's my own perception. When the normal overnight is still sub freezing, it is not spring. Remember March in most of New England gets as much snow as December and in many years more.

what a week for a wind weenie...

culminates with a huge damaging wind event on sat on both the ec and gfs.

Generator's at the ready. Bummed that WMECO had the Asplundh guy out and he dropped off a notice that they'll be doing some tree work. Not suprised since we had trees take down wires in front twice this year. But, I hope they don't go to town on the row of 200-yo maples.
