radarman
I'll ski steep bumps from first to last lift tomorrow and no knee pain at all Dave. It's why I work hard all off season to stay in shape. Moguls all day huh? I'm amazed by guys like you who just rip em over and over, but when it's so deep in the woods that you can keep linking turns... well, it's subjective for sure, but I think it's a little more fun. Surely you'll venture in there a few times right?
ski MRG
A different perspective from 10th Mountain trail... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-JdoHXz9iQ Blech. straight down a featureless gentle groomer. Skiing on intermediate groomers full of knuckleheads is far more dangerous than any skiing I do IMHO. I guess if you're having fun that's all that matters though. Gotta crash, big day tomorrow. Ski it if you can. Peace.

I don't yet posess the skills or the $$$ to try much else though. I prefer to go on the less travelled trails on my local hill. Having fun is what it is all about as Pete said. Some people jump out of perfectly good airplanes, too.

Surely you'll venture in there a few times right? I don't know where you ski but just about all I ski at MRG is steep woods. If you can't ski the bumps you can't ski steep trees period. Maybe out West in some wide open glades you can link nice GS style turns but any skiing in the woods I do requires cat quick turning or you eat a tree. You were just at Sugarbush but I guess wind hold kept you from Castlerock. MRG is all about the woods. Whatever floats your boat though, the important thing is to get out and enjoy the snow and Winter in general. If it gets you up and out and moving it's good. Think snow and keep skiing it up.

Sounds like you have the timing down though, only ski during off-peak hours. Remember MRG mid-week $39, best bargain on the East Coast. Some people launch themselves off perfectly good mountains too. You did say however, "I'll ski steep bumps from first to last lift tomorrow" and I guess I thought you meant you'd stay there, and I was surprised. I've been to MRG several times. And as for Sugs, Castlerock or no castlerock, there's always trees to be found somewhere. I actually prefer when the double is closed and you can hike/ski over from Heaven's gate. Keeps things fresher. The thicker it is, the more likely you are to find untouched stuff.

weatherMA
The worst part is the crowds for sure. When I was there on Sunday they weren't bad, except for a few areas. I can't do any advanced trails yet, but Ive only been one time this year unfortunately, so that's why. I wish I knew people who actually liked skiing haha. But the worst part for me on Sunday was not being afraid I couldn't handle something steep but more I came to a steep part and there was like 10 other people right near me at that part. powderfreak
People tell me I'm nuts for skiing in the thick stuff and my response is this ^^^ They roll their eyes usually The glades, woods, and backcountry/side-country is where its at. Anyone that's seen pictures I post on here can figure out where I spend most of my time, haha. Mansfield's wide open forests... especially now that we've got a snowpack deep enough to literally bury all the shwack on the lower few feet of the forest floor. Nothing better than over 2,000 vertical feet of open hardwood forests buried in snow.

But it's also nice to occasionally pull myself through rabbit holes with the tops of young firs, revealing a secret chute amidst the silence, thinking, nobody has been here yet this year, possibly ever.... Ginx snewx
Enjoy the chutes, the trees, the glades guys while you can. I miss it but have resigned this old body to understanding the years of athletic abuse have taken its toll so now its all about just having fun. I really enjoy watching people rip it up though. Pete might be in tip top perfect shape right now but it is pounding his knees and joints, just like any machine eventually the parts wear down. Enjoy it while you can guys. Long Live winter, I just have no interest in the trees. At 260 6 2ish and broad shouldered I'm pretty sure those neat litlte trails are more for the less top heavy guys. Plus my knees and ankles have already been done once and I don't feel like being a repeat customer. Give me a ridiculously steep and wide trail and I'll have a blast. But I still like to have the extra space in case I catch an edge. It's like anything else you make mistakes when nervous and confined trails make me edgy. I like some moguls, 3D at Sunday River is fun. But the body just doesn't like it long term.

I've got a redone right knee and left ankle. both old football/sports injuries. I'm fine now but I can't see pushing it. The bumps are just rough on the knees. 3D is a pretty nutty trail, those two drops would make it a black anywhere else. I guess at one time it was, but when they opened the peak with all the diamonds they had to make some blacks blue. The blue on Jordan that's nutty was another one. Skiing all the blacks at wawa...most of them anwyay....it's true what they say. A blue at SR is harder than a lot of blacks elsewhere.

Rogue Angel, quite the blue with double fall lines everywhere, yea some of the blues at SR are tough, even the top of Lolla is not green, seen many a newbie walk down Jordon down to the flats of Lolla. powderfreak
These are from yesterday: Come ski the steep and cliffy Kitchen Wall at Stowe... Awesome, steep, snowfields dropping off the ridge. But beware the avalanches that can flush you over cliffs and into places you don't want to be. I triggered this slab avalanche traversing out into the middle of the bowl. I think the last time I was there was 4-5 yrs ago. People don't realize you can get avalanches on the east coast. Last time I had the snow slide on me here was in the Slides at Whiteface. Nothing like big country avalanches but dangerous nonetheless.
