janetjanet998
not sure where to post this here or off topic, at eastern i think it was posted here Icelandic volcano 'set to erupt' Scientists in Iceland are warning that another volcano looks set to erupt and threatening to spew-out a pall of dust that would dwarf last year's event. ------------------------ earthquake tremors to the north east of the remote volcano range are the strongest recorded in recent times and there was "no doubt" the lava was rising. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/iceland/8311924/Icelandic-volcano-set-to-erupt.html
Mallow
If it is Bárðarbunga, that could be significant. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bárðarbunga#Eruptions There has been 1 earthquake centered near the volcano in the past two days, and three more to the north and east. http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/ Nothing really that impressive yet. buckeye
there were theories that the unexpected cold and snowy winter this year for many areas was in part due to volcanic activity last year. Hmmmmm

weatherdude
This link casts the activity in a less sensationalist manner than some of the sensationalist British press. http://www.jonfr.com/volcano/ Thanks for the dose of reality!! I noted as well as others here, that the earthquakes this week on Iceland as reported by the Iceland Met Office were much less than spectactular and even below average. This confirms that it is just media hype.

stellarfun
The Iceland Met Office has basically said the story is rubbish,--hyperactive British press again. http://www.icelandreview.com/icelandreview/daily_news/?cat_id=16567&ew_0_a_id=373779
am19psu
Are you being serious? Yeah, those theories are out there (though more from the Siberian volcanoes than Katla). I don't know what SO2 concentrations are in the polar regions right now, but you can make a pretty simple radiative transfer argument that suspended SO2 in the stratosphere would lead to a weaker polar vortex.
