This is one of the most intense wind setups (non-thunderstorm) we've had in a while. The winds align perfectly at all levels of the atmosphere:

And the jet stream that is going to be over us will be ripping:

Easily wind gusts over 50 MPH, and over 60 MPH on the ridges. And with an increasing brush fire threat, any that do develop will be very tough to tame.

How much lead time is a HW-Warning issued before the event? Will they wait untill tomorrow AM, or send out tonight?

Any ice jam issues around you?

not that im aware of?

i havent been out today though..my garage has a river running through it....easily 2 inches throughout the garage.

the water runs down from the hill out back and ponds up against the garage...then it pours through the walls around the beams.

i put in a french drain but i guess its not working (still frozen)

There's a flood adv for clfd county. Lawrence Twp has a road closed because of an ice jam. Are you close to there?

In theory, they could have it out right now since the high winds will begin within 12 hours. They are probably still deciding between an advisory or a warning. That being said, if this isn't a high wind warning event around here, I don't know what would be.

Yeah... they're notorious for sitting on watches for some reason. All shifts want to pass the buck to the next.

What is your guys thoughts on the possible 30% NOAA budget cut? Are they stupid?

While 30% is drastic, I'm sure there are ways NOAA could make significant cuts and not affect the end product all that much.

When the deficit is as big as it is in this country, you can't just make small cuts to programs (unless you want to hike taxes by a huge amount). They may need to prioritize what they spend their money on.

That all being said, it sounds like this will be a fight which could lead to a government shutdown. I'm sure there will be plenty of drama.

It's getting ridiculous anymore.

House Fiscal 11 Budget Proposal Could Devastate the National Weather Service's Life-Saving Warnings and Forecasts

PR Newswire | February 15, 2011 | 12:30 PM EST

WASHINGTON, Feb. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- As hurricane and tornado seasons approach, funding for the NWS will be nearly 30 percent less than the first half of 2011, if the Continuing Resolution proposed by the House majority is enacted. Congress's move will necessitate work furloughs and force rolling closures of Weather Warning Offices across the country. The effects will be felt in every aspect of daily life, including emergency management, television weather, and information used by our nation's citizens for transportation, commerce and agriculture.

Popping in to say hi. Tie everything you like down fellas.

Ive been swamped this week. I work for a PBS/NPR station so all resources are fighting the complete funding cut currently scheduled for a vote any moment.

If that happens, say bye to many stations.

Interesting. What would that mean for you guys.... as far as definite?

I thought the wind wasn't supposed to start until tomorrow morning? Currently it has been steady around 10 mph and gusting to 20. Is this going to be a long duriation wind event with highest winds tomorrow afternoon? :banned:

The worst of it will be during the daylight hours on Saturday.

At WITF, more than 25 layoffs and probably cutting most in-house programming.

It will shut down Erie, cripple WHYY and the Pitt and State College stations. WITF is in better shape because we are a top 30 affiliate, but it would be very bad.

it is amazing how this snowpack is still here. I would have thought it would have melted by now. Prob cuz its ice now and not really snow. Think that sleet we got really helped.

We have patches of whatever out there. Kind of ice, kind of snow. Sleet is a great snow preserver.

We have two puddle ponds, those might freeze over night. Ground frozen below surface so can't sink in.

Fight the good fight, and good luck to you. Several people I know work at WPSU.
