cpickett79
would you take the next 6 weeks being warm/dry if it culminated in 4/97? No way . never you think the next 10 days is gonna be tuff without a mod event....imagine when those ten days are up....having to endure another month+...nope too long i already have 28 inches of mashed potatoes on the ground. and yes it was beyond epic but snowpack doesn't stick around in april . give me a bunch of nickel and dime event but don't ever give me warmth ...and not a 40 day torch lol. ski MRG
Temp dropping fast now 23. Nice upslope snows, should see another 1-3" this afternoon here in the high terrain of the Berks/SVT. What a perfect Winter.

CoastalWx
How long did snow fall for? I basically picture it like the Xmas day after storm for us lasting another 6 hours with the heavy snow. Most of that fell in 12hrs..lol. It started snowing around 12-1pm. It started to really accumulate by 4-5pm where I was. Even though I was in Boston...I was about 6-7 miles inland and 200 feet up, so I was accumulating snow while Logan was a mix. Snow ended around 11-12pm the next day. I'd give anything to see a radar loop from 3pm that day until 8am the next morning. Had to be 35+dbz echoes in there.
cpickett79
Dude, do you remember that storm?? 1 day of snow no matter how historic is not worth trading 40 days of torch lol. for me. yes i do remember that storm......i got buried and it was awesome. 40 days of torch no thanks. i measure winter not just be snowfall but snowpack retention as well as no epic prolonged torches. I'm not ready to concede 42 days of warm /dry weather for a massive epic snowstorm.

With so much moisture in that system, Im wondering if that storm had a connection to the tropics. It was amazing to see all those yellows blossoming right over your area in the loop I saw, you probably saw 3-4 inches per hour for awhile there. If I'm going to go through the next 6 weeks with a couple of nickel and dime events, then torch all this away and put green leaves on the trees, if that's what it takes to get that storm back again. Once in a life time storm.

Why sacrifice a 2' snowpack now that will last awhile for a 2' snowpack in April that lasts a couple days? I was in Lexington at the time and I got buried too, and it was awesome, but no thanks on a guaranteed 6 week torch. Despite the warm look in the LR, I'll take my chances to add to the glacier the rest of this month and March.
PWMan
39 degrees...4th day in a row warmer than forecast. Upper 30s here too. Everyone's obsessing over the coming torch, but this is our 4th consecutive day of above-normal temps. We've flirted with 40 each day, and with the exception of Saturday night the overnight mins have been way above normal. Piece this together with whatever warmth comes over the next 10 days, and there goes at least half of February.

I'd sacrifice it in a second, that storm was amazing...most of the 2-3 feet fell in 12 hours. I'd especially not care this year because we've had 2 feet or more on the ground for a month now. Its not like we just got our big snow pack yesterday. But out where you are in the CT River valley, I wouldn't sacrifice it, because your area "only" got like 16-18" from the 1997 storm. But if it was 33", then its no contest. A 33" storm to me is better than trying to milk a slowly melting 33" snow pack over the next month. Nothing worse than 38 degrees and mud in late feb early march. Might happen anyway, but I won't sign for it.

cpickett79
no contest not even close for me. i want to enjoy winter ...the rest of winter and i like our chances this year with march snow and wouldn't even bet against a early april mod event. we have a top ten winter going and i don't want to sacrifice it ......i mean i wonder if people really think how long a 40 day torch is lol. yes if i could fast forward 40 days and arrive at what seems like tommorrow at april 1's and get a 25 inch snow i may take it (i may not as that means a few days after the winter is over) the pain of a 40 day torch is not something to be taken lightly IMO. i've had 3/4 hr/ snows this year. i've had nearly 20 inches in a snow storm. 25 inch snow storm is not worth it.
