Plains Weather Discussion

Recommended Posts

just had a friend of mine have an ice shelter fall through on a medium-sized lake. i'm just staying off them in general until we can get a little more cold weather.

maybe a coating of snow here tonight; otherwise, new 0z NAM says maybe a decent snowfall on sunday.

gfs says snow sunday as well

12z NAM and GFS not so good for sat/sun but better for tonight. i'd rather take it this weekend, as saturday's torch will melt a lot of whatever's on the ground.

Yeah I agree. Tonight looks like a nice little event as that trop undulation ejects through the plains. There may be some nice banding with that upper feature along the jet axis.

You might hit mid 70s if the ECM verified, much warmer at 850mb than today with the AK vortex keeping any cold air out of the CONUS.

Probably not that bad...guidance suggesting deep high cloud cover. Even then, hard to fully mix through the inversion in the dead of winter with the short and weak diurnal cycle without a good downslope wind component (like today). We won't mix through fully to those 16-17 degree C 850s. It will still be warm though...probably well into the mid 60s.

talking about tonights system...

the 18z comes in and says, NO SOUP FOR YOU. Ugh.

.42" on the 12z NAM, nothing (as in 0.00") on the 18z NAM.

GFS not very impressive either.

ECMWF weak and SW with it.

Hope the trend is wrong...We just can't catch a break around here.

Not sure if this is the right thread for this but I found it interesting that MSP is coming off three exceptionally warm months in a row. The 9th warmest October and November on record as well as the 13th warmest December. It will be interesting to see if things flip around for January.

yep, real warm and dry. this coming week certainly will be on par with the warm winter.

even the snow we got yesterday partially melted last night and lots of grass is visible.

lol we broke the record high for today before reaching 12 pm :axe:

Definitely impressive considering there's actually snow cover around now. Couldn't believe to see nearly 40 degrees at 8am this morning. This is my first winter up here but I'd imagine that's a very rare occurrence in these parts for January.

Ya this is my third winter up here so i'm not exactly a veteran up here but this is crazy. Interesting to see that the airport dropped 4 degrees in the past hour while the reading at the air force base has gone up a degree and is now 8 degrees warmer than the airport

Yea I noticed that as well, I'm assuming it's because we lost that westerly component to the wind while just a couple miles west they're still holding onto that downsloping wind.

Absolutely amazing

From MPX

Information from the Minnesota State Climatology Office, which puts this warm spell into perspective:

"There has never been a 60 degree temperature recorded during the first week of January in Minnesota's modern climate record. The warmest temperature ever recorded in Minnesota during the first week of January is 59 degrees, occurring on January 7, 2003 in Amboy, MN. The warmest temperature ever recorded in Minnesota on January 5 is 57 degrees, recorded at Crookston in 1902. Reaching 60 degrees ANY time ANYWHERE in January is quite rare, occurring in only 10 years of the 120 year modern record. The all-time record high temperature for any day in January is 69 degrees, occurring January 24, 1981 in Montevideo."

Current temp in Marshall, MN: 63°
