Thunder Road
With the upcoming unfavorable pattern change, and many fine mets calling for a return to winter by early March, I started thinking about late-season snow events in the Philadelphia area, generally March 1st or later. The list of recent, significant events I came up with is as follows: (Note: I have no formal classification scheme, i.e. must be at least x number of inches at any given location). 3/1/2009 3/16/2007 3/1/2005 3/16/2004 3/19/2004 4/7/2003 3/14/1999 4/1/1997 3/31/1997 3/2/1996 3/2/1994 3/13/1993 Feel free to respond with more and I will edit this post to add them to the list. In between commercials tonight I'll try to crank out some stats on Nina vs. Nino and whatnot wrt to late-season snow events. Some have said they are more common in Nina's. So anyway...discuss! ChescoWx
Looking back at my local Chester County data set since 1894 There have been 17 storms greater than 10" after March 1st I will just list those over 12" April 11, 1894 - 28.2" Mar 20, 1958 - 19.0" Mar 14, 1993 - 16.1" April 9, 1916 - 15.4" Mar 11, 1907 - 13.7" April 1, 1997 - 13.7" Mar 17, 1931 - 12.5" Mar 2, 1914 - 12.0"
chubbs
March 20, 1958 was probably the biggest snowfall in recent times in most of Chester County - 3' was not uncommon - 50" at Morgantown.

I'm just joking around, but in all seriousness it was a great set up it in March, and well it just didn't work out. Trust me in pains me too even til this day. donsutherland1
A quick look at late-season KU snowstorms. Near misses e.g., March 2009 are excluded.
Thunder Road
A quick look at late-season KU snowstorms. Near misses e.g., March 2009 are excluded. I'm surprised there's only one true Nina on the list. Although I guess many of the smaller, more Nina-like events weren't KU storms either.
