Once in a life time storms that I will never see again in my lifetime

This is a REALLY tough one to answer. Probably 1996 but that is only because I was more than 10 years younger. It's really splitting hairs if you think about it. They were both fantastic. You?

Well, being outside of New York City, I actually am going to go with the December Blizzard of 2010 that slammed us... It was better than Jan 1996 for the rates and wind... But duration factor, '96 remains surpeme.

To be fair, areas outside of BWI have more 20 inchers as well. ;)

I received three 20"+ inch storms last winter, IIRC.

Well that's what I was saying. Last year saw you guys get three of those which boosted your numbers of 20" storms. Normally, one or two of those would probably have produced similar results up here, but blocking FTL.

That 25" total was an estimate based on the depth of the snow at the end of the storm since the observer wrongly measured every hour rather than 6 hrs.......it is bull****.

Agree. My mouth fell open when I heard them announce the totals on TV. They were LESS than they were a few hours earlier. Ridiculous.

I love the heat and humidity, but it wears on me towards the end of August. I actually love Oakland as much in the summer as in the winter for that reason. Last August I was sitting on our deck at night and it was down to 50 something degrees. It was about 75 and muggy in Baltimore.

Elevation baby.

Well Baltimore has always been ahead of Boston for 20" storms, and maintained it through the 2000's. Of course, 2/58 and 3/60 were almost for sure really 20"+ storms for Boston, but Baltimore was measuring snow the same way back then.

I think Feb 2003 might always be among my favorites. I 'only' got about 17" at school in CT but it was a pretty epic storm nonetheless. I started UConnWeather.com (which is actually still live :o lol) during that one and remember wandering campus through drifts to paste little signs I made on the doors etc. I was always a dork...

Other than that, I saw some great storms in CT but nothing really topped what we had here last yr. 02-03 was more epic at my location where we easily topped 100" (though I was at school for a good portion), but last yr will be one I remember more fondly until it is (if while im alive) topped.

Nothing beats what I saw in the mtns of CA but that is cheating I guess.

February 5-6th 2010 is akin to the 1922 Knickerbrocker storm, come to think of it, it actually is the most direct comparsion, IMO. Although, the 1922 storm probably had some insane totals had they known about the 6 hour method back then; maybe that's #1 for BWI-DC overall? Rock Creek Park had 33" snow depth in 1922.

February 2003 blizzard. 36 inches

February 2010 Snowmageddon 32 inches

January 1996 Blizzard 32 inches.

the February 2003 storm doesnt rank high for alot of the Big cities. But we got absolutely crushed in the Shenandoah Valley with that storm. Almost 3 full days of snow. It still ranks as number 1 for me. I never thought I would see anything like the 1996 blizzard again in my life. Then the storm of 2003 hit. Last winter's storms still rank by far as the best winter in my life. What an incredible year last year. Completely different this winter as i am at about half of my annual snowfall so far but I was glad to have last weeks 9 inches.

The 1979 and second February 2010 storm were not as good out here. I still enjoyed them all though.

I've seen all these storms, but in a way February 1983 tops them all. Not for sheer density of snow accumulation, but that storm had the best rates, more whiteout conditions, and more thunder, lightning and high wind gusts at my location SW of BWI than in any snow storm I've seen.

That one, so far, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me for those reasons.

I was stuck in Wilkes-Barre for the 1996 storm, partying with a friend who was in college there, while my parents in South Jersey cashed in on 30"+. I went back to school in central PA the following week. They had 15-20" or so in the big storm, but then got stuck under a band during the late-week rain on the coast and ended with something like 35-40" from the two storms...though I may be wrong (my memory is very fuzzy from that time!). I'll never forget driving down Rt.15 and being dumbfounded by the walls of snow along it. The Susquehanna flooded something fierce not more than a week later.

I remember the 1983 storm, but not the details. 1993 was an amazing storm for its size and power, but I was plenty pissed that we went to rain after not much more than a foot. That snow was like concrete for a few days.

December 2009 and February 5-6, 2010 were incredible. The February storms were just mind-blowing, though. Pretty sure I ended with 27" in the first one, and another 10-12" from the second. Crazy. Absolutely crazy.

Chased that one Ian, the two pics of the Wife and Son, as well as the Court were on the 7th, random dude walking was the 6th inside Starbucks. It took us 4hrs to make it into DC around Dupont circle circa Friday the 5th, when we were only about 30-40 miles out that afternoon. Told the wife we may get some SN, but left here with a WSW in effect come to find out it was a Blitz upon arrival. Needless to say the trip sucked on her part, put the little one and I had an Epic trip down Connecticut in the height of it, no cars, and knee deep, never again!!! :snowman:
