Monthly totals and rankings for each of the winter months (DJF) for the past four winters. All four Decembers rank in the top 20...only one January was in the top 10 and was the "weakest" snowfall month overall outside of 2009...three of the four Februaries are in the top 10, except for 2009 which was a real dog.

Records begin in 1885.

For reference sake, 1971-00 and projected 1981-10 monthly normal snowfall for Chicago

I have to believe that ORD has broken the February snowfall record. 0.7" yesterday which brings them just 0.2" shy of taking over #1...and with the snowfall since midnight which has totaled 0.06" liquid through 7AM, haven't seen a snowfall report yet, 2011 has to be #1.

1) 27.8"...1896

2) 27.7"...2011 (through 2/25)

3) 26.2"...1994

4) 22.6"...1900

The race to 60" is on for Chicago. Sitting at 56.3" through yesterday at ORD...only 3.7" to go. If it happens, it will be the 8th time in Chicago's recorded history. Looking ahead to March, 1971-00 normal snowfall is 6.0" and projected 1981-10 normal snowfall is 5.4"...not that March, or any month for that matter, always follows the normals, but you get the idea. Wild card of course is this current system that the models have trended a bit SE with. Stay tuned...
