Sleet/Snow mixed for several hours, still blizzard conditions at times, though to the naked eye it certainly looks to not be having any trouble accumulating like youd expect with sleet. When all is said and done, the Feb 1/2 total will still probably be 8+ inches.

I'm in warren here and i'd say 7 inches max.I spoke to a friend about 20 miles north and he said around 11 so totals will be all over the place.

We had thundersnow and insane heavy snow around 11pm here, so even with the sleet not a bad storm. Just peaked downstairs, Im sure we are at 7"+ already since it began around 6:30pm, so all things considered not bad (Ill add in the 1.3" from part 1 when I get a better estimate in the morning). Over a foot of snow on the ground plus some nice drifts. Btw all snow, im assuming the warm tongue has passed. HAVE to get some rest lol I have to be up in a few hours.

Yeah true--I didn't know the Iowans had a vastly distinct regional accent to even MN. I definitely noticed it a little though.smile.gif

Its funny you mentioned that because one summer I went up to MN for a fishing/camping trip. The lady in the bait shop said I had a Southern accent and asked where I was from. I said, "Oh I am from the South, Northwest IL, South of here anyways." And she let out a huge laugh. Just said she guessed it must be an Illinois country sound. When I wen to college at NIU I was the country boy because I grew up in the rural farming communities of East Moline and Milan. Never thought of those cities as rural farming communities, but practically everyone there was from Chicago. So I guess I was the token "hick", pardon that term.

Honestly I prolly would have said the same thing, lol. If I heard cyclone or prolly you I would have thought more like southern, MO or around that latitude. In MN the typical rural accent is more the more Scandinavian style "Minnesota" made infamous by the Fargo movie in northern MN to a rural and muted midwest accent in the southern half of the state--so it definitely varies quite a bit.

How did you end up doing with storm totals down there? Sounds like a doozy for you guys.

Looks to me since I was out earlier at 1225am we've probably had another two inches or so, that would definitely put me around or over 18" possibly 19" still snowing too.

LOL!!!

I'm actually glad I fell asleep on this storm, not that it was my intention, but maybe god already knew I would be tiffed off at what was coming and insisted that I rest my weary eyes. You know I expected actual snowfall accumulations to be pretty awful, but I did NOT expect to only receive 3-6" when it was all said & done. And while everyone's now on the badwagon with additional accumulations with the wrap around, I'm not hold my breath for that one, I've been disappointed too many times by that lie. Not to mention per the observations we had a pretty notable period of sleet on this side of town which added insult to injury.

Yeah, it was a nice storm, but certinaly not anything I would consider memorable. In fact, Iwould describe it perfectly as a powdery version of the December 12th, 2010 storm. At least in the Blizzard of '99 we did actually get a foot of snow before getting dry slotted. So please get this crap out of here ASAP.

All of the above said, the expression of my experience with this storm is in no way meant to downplay the fiery of this storm, especially for those who really cashed in on the really heavy snows/nlizzard-like conditions and while I congratulate them for doing so well, I also encourage them along with those who experienced significant icing and/or are experiencing power outages in this bitterly cold weather to just stay safe and I wish you all have the best outcome at the end of this magnificent storm. I will admit the wind when it reached its full potential was no joke. You could hear it howling through the walls on the inside. Although we only had so much time of true blizzard conditons here (based on criteria), the visiblities would quickly drop from an average 3/4 mile and turn into a whiteout.

...BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 PM CST /4 PM EST/

THIS AFTERNOON...

...WIND CHILL WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THIS EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY

MORNING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN CHICAGO HAS ISSUED A WIND CHILL

WATCH...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM THIS EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY

MORNING. A BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 PM CST

/4 PM EST/ THIS AFTERNOON.

* TIMING...HEAVY SNOW WILL CONTINUE EARLY THIS MORNING OVER

NORTHEAST ILLINOIS AND FAR NORTHWEST INDIANA. THE HEAVY SNOWFALL

WILL GRADUALLY SHIFT INTO NORTHWEST INDIANA BY LATE MORNING INTO

THE AFTERNOON. ACCUMULATING SNOWFALL SHOULD END OVER NORTH

CENTRAL ILLINOIS EARLY THIS MORNING AND OVER NORTHEAST ILLINOIS

BY MID TO LATE MORNING. ACCUMULATING SNOWFALL WILL END OVER

NORTHWEST INDIANA BY MID TO LATE AFTERNOON. BLIZZARD CONDITIONS

WILL GRADUALLY EASE AS WINDS SLOWLY SUBSIDE THIS MORNING INTO

THE AFTERNOON.

* ACCUMULATIONS...ADDITIONAL ACCUMULATIONS THIS MORNING OF 2 TO 5

INCHES CAN BE EXPECTED OVER THE CHICAGO METROPOLITAN AREA...AND

OVER NORTHWEST INDIANA THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON. ELSEWHERE

ADDITIONAL ACCUMULATIONS SHOULD BE LESS THAN TWO INCHES. STORM

TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE IN THE 12 TO 18 INCH RANGE OVER

NORTH CENTRAL ILLINOIS...INCLUDING ROCKFORD AND VICINITY. STORM

TOTALS OVER THE CHICAGO METROPOLITAN AREA SHOULD END UP IN THE

15 TO 24 INCH RANGE...WITH TOTALS FROM NORTHWEST INDIANA

SOUTHWEST INTO EAST CENTRAL ILLINOIS IN THE 8 TO 14 INCH RANGE.

THE SEVERE BLOWING AND DRIFTING HAS RESULTED IN SNOW DRIFTS OF

OVER 5 FEET IN AREAS.

* WINDS...NORTHEAST WINDS FROM 20 TO 30 MPH...WITH WIND GUSTS TO

40 MPH ARE LIKELY AWAY FROM THE LAKE THIS MORNING BEFORE

SUBSIDING THIS AFTERNOON TO 10 TO 20 MPH. NEAR THE LAKE MORE

FEROCIOUS WINDS OF 30 TO 40 MPH WITH GUSTS OVER 50 MPH ARE

LIKELY THIS MORNING BEFORE SUBSIDING TO 15 TO 25 MPH THIS

AFTERNOON.

* BLIZZARD CONDITIONS...FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW WITH THE INTENSE

WINDS WILL RESULT IN WHITE OUT CONDITIONS OVER NORTHEAST

ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST INDIANA THIS MORNING. OVER NORTH CENTRAL

ILLINOIS...FALLING SNOW HAS SUBSIDED HOWEVER THE STRONG WINDS

WILL CONTINUE TO RESULT IN GROUND BLIZZARD CONDITIONS THIS

MORNING WITH ZERO VISIBILITY IN OPEN AREAS.

* TRAVEL...LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS REPORT THAT NEARLY EVERY

ROADWAY IS IMPASSABLE AND IN MANY CASES CLOSED. A STATE OF

EMERGENCY HAS BEEN DECLARED AND LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS ARE

PLEADING FOR PEOPLE TO STAY HOME AND OFF ROADWAYS. THERE HAVE

BEEN NUMEROUS REPORTS OF CARS OFF ROADWAYS AND PEOPLE STRANDED

AND THE EXTREME CONDITIONS ARE MAKING IT EXTREMELY DIFFICULT FOR

RESCUE PERSONAL TO REACH THE STRANDED. VISIBILITIES ARE SO POOR

IN OPEN AREAS THAT MOTORISTS COULD BECOME DISORIENTED AND UNABLE

TO EVEN SEE BEYOND THE HOOD OF THEIR CARS. BEFORE CONSIDERING

GETTING ON THE ROADS THIS MORNING...ASK YOURSELF IF GETTING TO

YOUR DESTINATION IS WORTH RISKING YOUR LIFE. CONDITIONS WILL

LIKELY SLOWLY IMPROVE LATER THIS MORNING INTO THE AFTERNOON AS

WINDS SUBSIDE AND SNOW ENDS...BUT UNTIL THEN...DO NOT TRAVEL!

* POWER OUTAGES...STRONG AND GUSTY WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO RESULT

IN NUMEROUS POWER OUTAGES. IN ADDITION...THE ADVERSE

CONDITIONS COULD MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO RESTORE POWER.

* OTHER IMPACTS...THE DEEP SNOW ACCUMULATION WILL MAKE SHOVELING

VERY DIFFICULT...AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY. DURING AND

IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE BLIZZARD OF 1999 OVER 40 PEOPLE IN

THE CHICAGO AREA ALONE LOST THEIR LIVES TO HEART ATTACKS WHILE

SHOVELING THE HEAVY SNOWFALL. TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS INDOORS AND

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE TASK AT HAND WHEN SHOVELING.

* WIND CHILLS...STRONG WINDS AND COLD TEMPERATURES ARE RESULTING

IN VERY COLD CONDITIONS TODAY WITH WIND CHILLS NEAR ZERO.

HOWEVER TONIGHT...BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES ARE LIKELY WITH

TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM 5 BELOW DOWNTOWN TO 20 BELOW IN THE

COLDEST OUTLYING AREAS. THE WINDS WILL SUBSIDE TONIGHT...BUT

STILL STRONG ENOUGH TO PRODUCE WIND CHILLS OF 20 TO 40 BELOW

ZERO.
