Digger
Ya know, two weeks ago, I was worried about getting through the season without running out of salt. Now, I'm hoping it snows at least eight more times, cause otherwise, I don't know what I'm going to do with all this damn salt. Dammit! Don't you laugh at me! Now, I'm hoping it snows at least eight more times, cause otherwise, I don't know what I'm going to do with all this damn salt. Dammit! Don't you laugh at me! I bought two 50 pound bags also. I did the same thing last year and didn't have to use any after March. I did use it early this year though. Maybe we can get a couple more storms yet. The only problem is the later you get the daytime heating melts it off easier.
Digger
I bought two 50 pound bags also. Oh my. I have about 9 tons, in 80# bags. On my patio... I have a new house with a driveway that needs more salt than ancitipated, and buying in 50# bags gets old. I need to stockpile Assuming you're looking for pallet quantities. 50 # bags come 49 to a pallet, and 80# bags come 30 to a pallet.. Atlas Clay, which mainly deals in pipe and related products, stocks pallets of salt in the winter. They're located on Chateau Street down in the Northside. They'll also sell you one bag, if that's what you want. You can also get pallets of salt from the Morton's distributor, Muellers Hardware, who has a yard in the Casey Industrial park, off Beaver Ave. in the same neighborhood. They might also sell by the bag, but I'm not positive about that. In the south, I've also gotten it from Federouch Landscape Supply, who has yards in Peters and Carnegie. I've dealt with them all, and don't hesitate to recommend any of them.
Plumres
I have not seen anyone commenting on this model showing 21 inches of snow next week for Pittsburgh. I know it will change every 6 hours until then, but it is fun to dream. http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/~ckarsten/bufkit/image_loader.phtml?site=kpit

Something to watch but it usually does not work out for us. Currently 57 degrees at my house and I am going to go for a brisk walk soon.

RitualOfTheTrout
It was nice to pop the windows open for a couple hours today and get that fresh spring smell into the house. Took down the reaming Christmas lights off the gutter today too. Got the itch to do some vegetable gardening now that the ground is bare and I can actually see it. On that note. the 18z GFS looks like 4-6 inches for Tuesday. We all know its not likely to verify as is but interesting to look at.

This was one of those days where I really wished I didn't have to work. I probably should've called off today and played some hockey in the park or something. Lol As far as Tuesday goes, just two runs ago the GFS had us getting 20 inches I believe. I was certainly skeptical of that and I'm also skeptical of what the 18z is showing as well. I'm just considering what kind of winter this has been for us and the numerous amount of hits shown for our area 4 or 5 days out that didn't verify. This one went south and got a lot weaker in just 2 runs, so I'm not going to be optimistic about this one quite yet. The NWS isn't taking it very seriously either considering what their current forecast is. At least it gives us something to watch anyway, even if it ends up being another miss in the end. When do you start to plant your cold weather crops such as cabbage and peas? Last year I had them in the garden on March 21st.

====================================================================================================================== 18.7 inches of snow at hour 84. I will say I am surprised that we are seeing those sort of totals in this time period.
CoraopolisWx
The 18Z nam was showing something, but the 0z has taken the second low to another level. Nice to see everyone back in mid season form again, when I saw that 0z nam, i was like WTF.
CoraopolisWx
If forecasting the more traditional storms was difficult this winter, it's gonna be crazy trying to forecast mon. night - tue. night. It seems everyone is in pretty good agreement with sunday into monday.
blackngoldrules
Checking out the 06z GFS and NAM this morning, they couldn't be further apart when it comes to Monday night into Tuesday. The NAM still has us getting significant snow, while the GFS has us getting very little once the front moves through. The other models seem to be somewhere in between those two. I tend to lean more toward the GFS since the NAM in that time range hasn't done very well, and tends to be wetter than the other models in that range. If the NAM still shows this solution for a few more runs, and/or the GFS starts showing a wetter solution, then maybe it can be taken more seriously. RitualOfTheTrout
12z NAM looks far less impressive.
CoraopolisWx
I liked the PIT AFD this morning. Informative without being too detailed.
Burghblizz
12z NAM looks far less impressive. They should cut the NAM off at 48 hours so we don't get sucked in to what it shows outside of that...
weatherman5416
18Z GFS looks slightly better for us. City and south and east looks like .5-.75 while the city northwest is at .25-.5. But then again, it's the 18Z run and it's the GFS.
MrsH
I bought two 50 pound bags also. I did the same thing last year and didn't have to use any after March. I did use it early this year though. Maybe we can get a couple more storms yet. The only problem is the later you get the daytime heating melts it off easier. Save it for next year----the price will only go up!

But then again, it's the 18Z run and it's the GFS. It's also warmer though. Hour 54 850s and surface are above freezing so likely all the precip that falls to that point on this run would be rain. This setup has a high bust potential one way or another. We could see anywhere form cloudy skies to accumulating snow depending on the exact evolution of that first system. Paweatherguy1
I'm ready for spring. Nam is an epic fail and south...might not get a dusting.
RitualOfTheTrout
I'm ready for spring. Nam is an epic fail and south...might not get a dusting. lol, well then don't look at the 6z GFS or 12z NAM today. Both would give us at least a couple inches of snow. NAM looks a bit slower which is good as it allows a bit more separation from the first wave so the cold air can get in and it allows the second wave to track a bit further north. Good news is we are only about 36 hours from the start of the event so the solutions that start coming in now *should* be drilling down to a consensus. The interaction between the PV and the SE ridge will be interesting. The -10C 850's will be close by to the north, but also if you look, the 10C to our south are relatively close also. Another issue will be how much "fuel" the first wave leaves behind.
RitualOfTheTrout
When do you start to plant your cold weather crops such as cabbage and peas? Last year I had them in the garden on March 21st. I usually don't plant any of that stuff. I wait til about Mid may and plant tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, beans, cucumbers, and things like that.
