Digger
Nice BIG thunderstorm here for the past 45 minutes or so. Probably the closest cloud to ground strike I've ever seen, somewhere in the woods behind my garage. Do you know there's just a split second of a sizzling noise, before the big boom? I could swear, even with all the wind, that I could smell wood smoke in the few minutes after it hit. I'll have to go out later and take a look.... I can't see the top of the filter inlet... Beaver Co, Has been getting nailed and they look to be back building a little. Here in the north hills the storms jumped right over me. I have picked up .02 inches of light rain. Storms came right up to 79 north and then refired to my south and east and west. This area has been a dry hole for thunderstorms this summer. For some reason they die right when they get here and refire from the north side and the city south and east. I am getting strong winds from the east now. Washington Blvd is like a drain when there is torrential rainfall. You got steep hills on both sides, and all that water is channelled right down the road. Also, once you reach Allegheny River Blvd, the grade rises back up again, so there is a bath tub effect at that intersection.

Digger
Washington Blvd is like a drain when there is torrential rainfall. You got steep hills on both sides, and all that water is channelled right down the road. Also, once you reach Allegheny River Blvd, the grade rises back up again, so there is a bath tub effect at that intersection. It's worse than that even. There's a whole watershed that's channeled into two nine foot diameter drains that run through the valley there. Jamie, if you spent a lot of time in the area you could probably attest to this--there's no natural watercourse visible in any of Point Breeze, Homewood, East Liberty--nothing in that whole Negly's Run watershed. (At least none that I could name, and I grew up in Shadyside.) If you look at the Historic Pittsburgh Maps collection that Pitt has online, you can find this one of the Sewer System that dates from 1890. It's all contained in those pipes under Washington Blvd, and most of that flood water came up out of the manholes. Anybody have an idea of where this event stands in terms of 50 year rainfall, 100 year rainfall, etc., for that area?

I felt the car sway back and forth for about 20 seconds. I had that feeling before on a bridge but I wasn't on one. I was sitting in my truck eating lunch when I felt my truck move. My truck shakes pretty easy when it is windy out. I knew something was up when I realized there's very little wind out. At least not nearly enough to shake my truck anyway. My wife just told me that they evacuated her building.

JamieOber
Don't hold me to this, but I think it's the building that used to house the Vermont Flatbread that has a crack in the wall still there from the great 1812 earthquake. VALID 250348Z - 250515Z THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR TORNADO WATCH 805 CONTINUES. THE SEVERE THREAT EXTENDING FROM WRN NY SWWD INTO NRN OH AND ERN IND WILL LIKELY CONTINUE EWD ACROSS THE REMAINDER OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 804 AND TORNADO WATCH 805 LATE THIS EVENING. WW ISSUANCE TO THE EAST OF THESE WATCHES REMAINS POSSIBLE. SEVERAL NEARLY CONTINUOUS LINE-SEGMENTS ARE ONGOING FROM LAKE ONTARIO SWWD ACROSS LAKE ERIE INTO NW OH. THIS LINE IS LOCATED ALONG AN AXIS OF MODERATE INSTABILITY COINCIDENT WITH THE ORIENTATION OF A 40 TO 50 KT LOW-LEVEL JET. REGIONAL WSR-88D VWPS SHOW ABOUT 40 KT OF FLOW AT 1 KM SUGGESTING THE MORE INTENSE BOWING LINE-SEGMENTS MAY HAVE A WIND DAMAGE THREAT. ALTHOUGH A HAIL THREAT WILL ALSO BE POSSIBLE...THE GREATEST POTENTIAL FOR HAIL MAY EXIST ACROSS LAKE ERIE AND NRN OH WHERE SBCAPE VALUES ARE MAXIMIZED FROM 2000 TO 2500 J/KG AND MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATE ARE STEEP. THE SEVERE THREAT SHOULD BECOME INCREASINGLY ISOLATED AS THE LINE MOVES EWD INTO DECREASING INSTABILITY ACROSS THE WRN APPALACHIAN FOOTHILLS. FOR THIS REASON...ADDITIONAL WW ISSUANCE REMAINS UNCERTAIN FOR THE OVERNIGHT PERIOD.
