Had lightning off to the west here for a good four to five hours last night. It began around 8:30 or so but the rain didn't move in until near midnight. It was brief.

Looks like our nicest weather since that stretch in February comes to an end today as two upper level lows move into the region, one followed directly by another, leaving us with unsettled and not as nice weather for what looks to be a whole week. I miss those quick-hitting cold fronts that just come in and leave, providing only a brief respite from the sunny weather. Maybe the end of May will be nicer but I can't say for sure.

DAY 1 CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK

NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK

0744 AM CDT THU MAY 12 2011

VALID 121300Z - 131200Z

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS FROM THE MID MO VALLEY TO TX

COAST...

...THERE IS A SLGT RISK OF SVR TSTMS OVER PARTS OF THE LOWER GREAT

LAKES AND UPPER OH VALLEY...

...MID MO VALLEY TO TX COAST...

MIDLEVEL LOW CENTERED NEAR THE CO/KS BORDER AS OF 12Z WILL SLOWLY

PROGRESS ESEWD THROUGH THE CNTRL PLAINS THIS PERIOD. THIS SYSTEM

WILL BE ATTENDED BY A VORTICITY MAXIMUM AND 45-50 KT MIDLEVEL JET

STREAK WHICH WILL TRANSLATE FROM NM INTO ERN PARTS OF KS/OK AND NRN

TX BY 13/00Z. IN THE LOW LEVELS...SURFACE CYCLONE N OF HLC WILL

CONCURRENTLY DEVELOP EWD TO SERN NEB/NERN KS BY LATE AFTERNOON OR

EARLY EVENING. TRAILING PACIFIC FRONT WILL ALSO SHIFT E INTO ERN

PARTS OF KS/OK AND CNTRL TX DURING THIS TIME. THIS BOUNDARY WILL

LIKELY SERVE AS THE FOCUS OF STRONG-SEVERE TSTM DEVELOPMENT LATER

TODAY INTO TONIGHT.

LATEST MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGESTS THAT RESIDUAL OUTFLOW BOUNDARY FROM

THE OZARKS SWD INTO LOWER MS VALLEY...WWD INTO CNTRL TX WILL WASH

OUT TODAY ALLOWING FOR THE NWD FLUX OF AN INCREASINGLY MOIST

BOUNDARY LAYER INTO THE REGION AHEAD OF PACIFIC FRONT. WHEN COUPLED

WITH DAYTIME HEATING AND STEEP LAPSE RATE PLUME ATTENDING

ABOVE-MENTIONED MIDLEVEL IMPULSE...AFTERNOON AIR MASS IS EXPECTED TO

BECOME MODERATELY TO STRONGLY UNSTABLE WITH MLCAPE VALUES OF

2000-3000+ J/KG.

WHILE ISOLATED SEVERE STORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE BY AFTERNOON ALONG THE

LENGTH OF THE PACIFIC FRONT...THE GREATEST PROBABILITY OF MORE

SIGNIFICANT STORMS...INCLUDING SUPERCELLS...IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP

FROM FAR SERN KS/SWRN MO SWD THROUGH ERN OK/WRN AR INTO NERN TX.

HERE THE STRONGEST INSTABILITY IS EXPECTED TO BECOME COLLOCATED WITH

MIDLEVEL JET STREAK AND RESULTANT 40-45 KT OF DEEP-LAYER SHEAR.

EXPECT THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT TO CONTINUE INTO THIS EVENING

BEFORE DIMINISHING LATER TONIGHT.

ELSEWHERE...BOWING MCS WHICH HAS EVOLVED EARLY THIS MORNING OVER THE

LOWER RIO GRANDE VALLEY /NEAR DRT/ HAS RECENTLY ACCELERATED AND WILL

LIKELY CONTINUE SEWD TO THE LOWER TX COAST NEAR CRP. 12Z CRP/BRO

SOUNDINGS INDICATE THAT INFLOW AIR MASS IS CHARACTERIZED BY 100 MB

MEANING MIXING RATIOS OF AROUND 18 G/KG AND STEEP MIDLEVEL LAPSE

RATES...RESULTING IN MUCAPE IN EXCESS OF 3000 J/KG. AS

SUCH...EXPECT THAT MCS WILL PRODUCE A SWATH OF DAMAGING WINDS AND

HAIL AS IT PROGRESSES TOWARD THE COAST THIS MORNING.

...LOWER GREAT LAKES/UPPER OH VALLEY...

A SERIES OF WEAK VORTICITY MAXIMA CRESTING LARGE-SCALE RIDGE AXIS

ARE EXPECTED TO SUPPORT EPISODIC STRONG-SEVERE TSTM DEVELOPMENT

TODAY...FOCUSED INVOF SURFACE WARM FRONT. UPSTREAM SOUNDING DATA

INDICATE THE PRESENCE OF 30-35 KT SWLY WINDS IN THE MIDLEVELS. WHEN

COUPLED WITH THE WARMING/DESTABILIZING BOUNDARY LAYER...SETUP WILL

BE SUPPORTIVE OF MULTICELL CLUSTERS CAPABLE OF HAIL AND LOCALLY

DAMAGING WIND GUSTS.

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY

VALID 121430Z - 121600Z

STORMS ARE EXPECTED TO GRADUALLY UNDERGO INTENSIFICATION FROM NRN OH

SEWD THROUGH WV. LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WIND WILL BE THE MAIN

THREATS. AREA IS BEING MONITORED FOR A WW.

LATE THIS MORNING A QUASISTATIONARY FRONT EXTENDS FROM THE SRN

APPALACHIANS THROUGH CNTRL WV...CNTRL OH INTO NRN IND AND NERN IL.

STORMS ARE DEVELOPING WITHIN WEAK WARM ADVECTION REGIME EAST AND

NORTH OF THIS FRONT WHERE 1000-1500 J/KG MUCAPE EXISTS ALONG

The first round sort of fizzled here and just had some light rain and a little thunder.

This next batch seems to be packing some heavy rain and a lot of lightning, if it holds.

We are 17.94" away from reaching out normal rainfall

PIT is currently at 19.91" of rain for the year so far, we got a little over a half year's worth of rain, and we normally don't reach that until July 6th.

We are currently 7.04" above normal so far.

Normal to date is 12.09".

This has very 2003ish feel.

Wow, what a year for hailstorms.

I got caught in a heavy thunderstorm with marble sized hail in Forest Hills around noon today.

Now I am home and just had a storm pop up and dropped nickel sized hail as it moved just north of me.

The storm is just to my north now and looks to be hammering wexford and Pine areas.

I have lost track but the hail storms have been crazy this year.

I have also picked up another inch of rain in 3 storms today taking my total to over 6 inches thus far for the month.

Now since I am typing new storm firing to my south with ctg lightning.
