Pittsburgh/Western PA Weather

Looking at the radar, the precip is really intensifying over our area right now.

Yes, look at the NWS radar. Getting dark greens and yellows.

I am at a higher elevation and live on a dead end street and my snow is sticking to the pavement already.

My temp has dropped to 33.

I think we get more accumulation overnight than tomorrow.

I have a very juicy looking yellow band about to move through my area. Still snowing heavily here.

Latest full HRRR total snowfall map (02z), favors north side of town.

Seems to be modelling this area of heavier snows currently over the Pittsburgh area ok, if you look at the reflectivity loop

HERE, you can see that there is a break before the deform moves back in from eastern Ohio.

2" on the deck railing ATTM. About 3/4" on the walks. Biggest flakes I've seen all season.

But it looks, on the radar, like it'll be tapering off soon...

Yea this region of banded snow looks quite nice on radar but if there's a bust in the action that's lasts for awhile, it's going to hurt totals. HRRR continues to insist that right when the break in the action gets somewhat north of Pittsburgh for a brief time, the deform realigns and drops back southeast into SW PA. I wasn't really keen on warning totals in the Pittsburgh metro area to begin with, but I still think 3 or 4 inches total is attainable when all is set and done with some possible 5's in the northern suburbs. Now that i've seen this get itself established a bit and have the HRRR in a fairly accurate timeframe to model the precip shield, I think if there are to be any warning totals to be had in Allegheny county, its going to be in the northwesternmost portion of the county. PBZ probably shaves some of the southern warning counties and turns em to advisories later this morn. We'll have to see about the far southwest where there are advisories.

Done, basically here and maybe an inch of snow...

Guys, I'm worried that Rants has found PaWxguy, tied him up and taken his handle.

Anyway, a general 2.5" to 3" reported across Allegheny county overnight, with 4 to 4.5" in Butler county. Interesting to the precip shift north, and then fill back to the south. We'll see how part two does today.

Certainly a beautiful morning.

Overnight batch was pretty disappointing here, complete changeover happened by about 11:30pm last night with some pretty heavy snow fall rates with nice big flakes. To say I have a thick coating on grassy surfaces would be generous. I went out to brush the car off and I could see breaks in the clouds. Just heard that areas in Butler and western Allegheny have 3-4 inches so looks like I missed the good stuff by about 20 miles. Not surprised as this cutoff was pretty evident on the models yesterday when they indicated the further north and west you were the better. Lets see what round 2 can do today.

I ended up with a fuzz more than 3" here. Went out to do the snowplowing thing, which is all down closer to Downtown, and found that I literally brought more snow with me in the back of the truck than I found in Downtown and the Southside. The grass wasn't even coated in some spots. I'm skeptical about the totals progged for today. We certainly won't see those amounts on pavement....

That's the "good news/bad news" side following these things as an adult.

I don't expect my commute into town to be that bad -> good news

I'm leaving a picturesque scene with more coming. Probably going to see mostly slush downtown -> bad news

Elevation dependent...especially on roads.... as a lot of late season storms are

About 2 inches here mostly on the grass, rooftops and trees, like most everyone else.

It looks like some heavier bancs are moving from the Northwest.

My temp just went from 31 to 32.

I believe any further accumulation today will be strictly on the grassy services and hard pavements will remain just wet.

There was about 3.5" IMBY.....I drove literally a half mile down route 8 and lost an inch. Another mile and there was about an inch total. Pretty amazing latitude/elevation differences.

Mostly slushly/wet downtown, but heavy wind driven snow at times which is whitening things up.

I think we will have the precip for 2 or 3" more today.....but what actually sticks in a particular area will be heavily dependent on elevation, urban vs rural, snowfall rates, etc.

I think it is safe to say bust on this one...and fairly bad, but generally the potential was high for such a bust. I don't care either way, but it never did seem like the forecast had much model support, so I just don't understand it.

We have zero accumulation and although it is snowing right now, I don't expect to get hardly any accumulating snow. It is also 34F which doesn't help. The call was for 3-6" after an initial 5-9", so I think it is safe to say this is the biggest miss this year. I am ready for summer, anyway.

I am in Ross and not too bad here, although I haven't been out yet. Heading out shortly.

As you can see in the picture most roads and pavements are wet. My sister called from Franklin Park and said it was worse up there with at least 3 inches.

Not sure the people without power think it was a bust. The forecast actually busted low for me w/r/t overnight totals. The model warning criteria support was primarily ECMWF.

It's more a case of elevation, latitude, and city heat producing dramatically different results. I think you see this a lot with upper level systems that rely on dynamic cooling. I'm not sure there is a perfect forecast in that type of scenario for an area so diverse in landscape.

Very good point. Without the presence of a strong surface low early on, there was never that stong northerly flow at the surface to pull down the cold air.

So like you said, this became more of a microclimate storm, with more localized varieables coming into play.

Although as I type, I am in a heavy snow band.:lol:

I should have specified it was a bust in my area, particularly southern PA and northern WV. We got zip down here, literally no accumulation. Certainly other areas did receive a substantial and accurately predicted impact, but in this area that was not the case. The WWA was dropped early this morning.

Not sure the people without power think it was a bust.

The guy who got wet yesterday, messing around in the rain putting the plow back on his truck, and then never even touched the pavement with it; the guy whose 3 1/2" total has now rotted down to 2 1/2", rather than increasing by 2-4" during the forecast periods of heavy snow today; that guy thinks it was sorta bust-ish...

Fair enough - because I'd imagine even outside of town at higher elevations got virtually nothing

Glad to see the snow last night but I am glad it is over. I was out and about today and the cold was getting to me. I am now ready for spring. 2 decent winters in a row. I can't complain. Looking forward to a good run tomorrow and 52 degrees and definitely looking forward to some warmer weather and thunderstorms.
