baroclinic_instability
The NAM really goes crazy after 03Z with the convective snow once the heights crash. NAM actually not doing too bad for northern IL right now.
Chicago WX
I worked a sleet storm back when I was at Louisville over a decade ago. The Valentine's Day storm of 2007 had a decent amount of sleet here if I recall correctly. I guess I was was referring more to the "glad you're seeing sleet" part. You know, instead of freezing rain? I do remember there being a lot of sleet with Feb 2007 down there. We were on the good side of things here in LAF with that storm...not so much this time. on_wx
Leading edge of the snow already over central Lk Erie. NAM/GFS way too slow. RUC's got the idea. YQG (Leamington) reported light snow falling with 25 kmh winds at 23z. Off to the races!
A-L-E-K
About to get crazy in the next 2 hours as some of the heavier returns push north.

snowstormcanuck
Lol, Fon du Lac is in the teens and reporting mixed precipitation. I hope that is a typo or something. sfc temps really don't matter when it comes to pl/zr but there's no way FDL has mixed precip being that far north where the cold air is deep. iowahawkeyedave
Here in North Liberty, IA we have foot and a half drifts at least so far, at least that's what my dad reported about an hour ago as he went into work. Snowing very heavily, flakes are pretty small but densely packed, making it very hard to see much of anything at all. Especially with the wind. Moneyman
Lol, Fon du Lac is in the teens and reporting mixed precipitation. I hope that is a typo or something. It's snow here. Probably a typo. Very light snow, leading edge just got past here it looks like.
JoMo
I don't know if Jomo said anything about flake size but I'd be curious to know what it was out there since he got 18" Tiny sandblasting flake size. Once the deformation zone got going, flake size increased somewhat to decent size. Nothing half dollar sized or quarter sized even.

Hoosier
We have to be getting 40-50 mph gusts...whipping the sleet all over the place.

GordoFabulous
I may be mistaken, but I think I just heard a rumble of thunder a couple minutes ago. Still very heavy sleet with very little freezing rain mixing in.

Jendoc
2-1/2 hours to get home. White out conditions most of my drive. Be careful everyone. Thankful the owner of my job closed tomorrow. A-L-E-K
I'll already say this, when it comes to pure blizzard conditions, this is dominating '99, it's not even close. Sounds like some roofs are about to blow off.
daddylonglegs
LSE force field in full effect... snow having a hard time coming north. That area west of the Quad Cities looks good.
Thundersnow12
hard to tell here but I'd say a solid 3"-4" down here, interested in how things develop over the next 3 hours or so.

res
I was 9 yo living in Ft Wayne for the '78 blizzard, which I believe set my love for weather and forecasting/obs....climbing on our roof from drifts. In fact, a "weather kit" for Christmas beforehand, and the barometer fluid rushing up and into the jar - old school. I digress, I have never seen this much sleet in my life. It is at least 6" deep on my deck and drive, and still going. As Hoosier said, a "bucket list" to do - I have no complaints with this winter - at all!! A fill in this weekend, and more Mon-Wed next week - happy camper. And quite a guy........still are!

Sounds like some roofs are about to blow off. I agree. The only time I've ever seen snowfall like this was the Jan '95 blizzard. The combination of the high winds and very heavy snow is fascinating. A lot of times we get the snow, and then the wind comes later after most has fallen. You can hear it roaring from inside the house.
baroclinic_instability
How do my chances look Baro? I haven't checked since busy with the obs. Tough call overall--flake size will hurt ratios--but I think a solid 7-10" maybe 11-12" with more than enough blowing/drifting.
