Elmira over to snow...or at least snow mixing in enough to make ASOS report it. Good sign for later...hopefully we can rip for several hours early this morning and rack up some decent amounts.

BDL vis has steadily dropped too.

It's snowing at about 1 1/2sm here or so, but crappy dendrites.

The snow texture look on radar has moved slowly but surely S and SW...it looks like snow near POU...but maybe slightly north and over N CT near Tolland...but likely still sleet in there. But wouldn't be surprised to see it go to all or mostly at some point. It will be interesting to see if Kevin has legit flakes in there when he gets up to feed the birds at 5am.

:weenie:

SOMEone's in an overly good mood for 4" of snow.

ILLINOIS ROUTE 50 COMPLETELY IMPASSABLE IN BOTH DIRECTIONS BETWEEN MANTENO AND PEOTONE. DRIFTS MEASURED BETWEEN 2 AND 4.5 FEET. AT LEAST 25 VEHICLES STRANDED...INCLUDING AN IDOT PLOW. A FRONT-END LOADER IS BEING UTILIZED TO RESCUE STRANDED MOTORISTS.

That............would have made my month. Instead it made 2nd place in my night. Still Love it. Really Love it.

He asked if I was on drugs and told me he wasn't weenie enough to go out and measure that sh** lol

The event we had a few weeks ago where we had ZR here you should have seen me trying to measure, slipping all over the place and nearly busting my fanny. I went into the neighbors yard to measure off a small tree in his yard and nearly busted myself several times...not sure if he would have been happy had I hurt myself in his yard trying to measure ice accretion.

I would assume he would have close to 0.50''.

Not a chance..there would be huge problems there already if they had that....they could end up with that or higher in the end...but no way they have that already. They havent even gotten 0.25" of liquid yet.

And power is already going out...wow. That's what lead me to think they had that much...guess I was way off.

Will - Dec. 9th, 2005 doesn't surprise me. It is the Holy Grail in so many ways. So why not some Hail reports?

Looking at the Weather Top Northeast radar, it looks like the back edge is going to get here in 6 hours haha. It's Haaaauuuling. I just take the gap it's done in the 2:15 period, and measure. Ray it May well be out of here by 10am. And since it won't help my snowpack, please get out of my house you bad storm! (but Crush MisWest records on your way out, and don't slam the door.)

Hopefully they get some heavy rain to alleviate the strain on power lines.

Thanks, Will...just what I want to ruin the snowpackdevilsmiley.gif Doesn't look as if plain rain is going to be a significant p-type here in Westchester despite a low cutting through Illinois, interesting.

We haven't had nearly that much yet, and a lot of it has been sleet here. But the streets are definitely becoming extremely slippery, and a glaze is noted on trees in the yard. 24.6/23

I don't think most people realize how much 0.5" of ice actually is. They always over estimate it. There is a monster difference between a quarter inch and a half inch of ice. But to the naked eye a lot of people think a quarter inch of ice is a half inch...because a quarter inch of ice is a lot and looks very impressive on trees and such.

In the absolute disaster ice storm here in Dec 2008, we had like 1.1-1.2 inches of ice and it honestly looked to me like 2-3 inches of ice just eyeballing it...bit thats because when its clung to everything it just looks obscene. It always looks more than it is.

I'd much rather that...this sh** just creates more problems. The snowpack is still tremendous so the flooding would stink, too...so I guess there's no real way around it.

We've got nowhere near 0.5"...but it's enough to create problems. Power has flickered twice here. Judging by reports from surrounding towns it seems like I'm lucky to have not lost it for at least a few minutes.

The icing itself isn't really that bad. I think it's the fact that we saw sleet/ice/sleet earlier today..and now the sleet/freezing rain is just really making things worse. We lost part of a gutter earlier today from the combination of the snow with high water content and the new sleet/freezing rain.

What a mess. How're you doing up there with the snow, bud?

Measuring ice is quite difficult too, not many people actually know how to do it and doing so can be very dangerous given how slippery conditions can be outside and you're exactly right, when just looking at ice accretion it can appear like alot more than what it actually is.

I should have thought harder about that post though, 0.50'' of ice would certainly be causing some major issues down that way.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen a half inch of ice, that's a truly staggering amount. I wonder if we could get there tonight, however, unfortunate as it would be.

I've seen pictures from the January 1998 ice storm in Upstate NY. Was that more than the December 2008 event, Will? Perhaps 2" ice in some areas, if I recall correctly?
