Say what? 70MPH winds and 20"+ is weak? You do realize that there are entire cities, and rather large ones at that, that are completely shut down right now?

Here is the AFD from NWS Chicago last night...imagine if CTP issued this? Definitely not "weak" in my books...

ITS NOT A FIT NIGHT OUT FOR MAN NOR BEAST. BLIZZARD OF 2011

UNDERWAY WITH TREACHEROUS CONDITIONS REPORTED ACROSS THE WFO

CHICAGO FORECAST AREA. VISIBILITIES LESS THAN 1/4SM...WIND GUSTS

IN EXCESS OF 50 MPH...THUNDER/LIGHTNING IN HEAVY SNOW...SNOWFALL

RATES IN EXCESS OF AN INCH PER HOUR HAVE ALL BEEN REPORTED FROM

VARIOUS LOCATIONS. REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH SNOW EVENTUALLY

ACCUMULATES...THIS IS A DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING

STORM.

He should come here to NEPA where we have about half of our seasonal norm so far. Or maybe even IPT.

Yeah but I have been cleaning snow up. About 3 times a week lately. I spent 4 hours today on cleanup. "Nasty heavy stuff"

It's all adding up. But it would be nice to see over a 6" snowfall.

19.8" total snowfall so far this season.

Up to 37 degrees pavement ice is melting nicely.

Looks like they had what we did around NYC on 12/26. That was one of the most ferocious wind/snow combination storms I've ever seen, and I wasn't even in the worst of it. E NJ had up to 10" more than I did, but my house shook from the 60+ mph wind, power was out for many of us, and my road was impassable for 2 days (many were for up to a week). The railroads were shut for 2 days, and NYC was effectively paralyzed. This has to be a top 3 storm in Chicago.

Funny thing is Bostonians complained about the 12/26 storm because the storm matured over us and began to occlude over them, making the snow more showery and making very high amounts more intermittent up there.

I think he's upset because they have been adding it up in the nickel and dime variety, and just want a big storm. Still, doesn't come across as too brilliant.

They have had a few moderate events. He seems like a good guy but man, 36 inches on Feb 2 doesn't suck unless you are in upstate NY.

That makes me think of something, Maytown, I have noticed - lots of people on American set a high bar for winter to meet 90 percent of the time it will never meet.

Yuck. I'm starting to see melting from the tree next to my house and I'm hearing icicles falling and cracking, so hopefully that process will be done before the winds kick up.

My girlfriend got called into work and is reporting trees down all over Camp Hill with little to no traffic.

The more I think about CAD and how vulnerable we are to it in this area, it surprises me that we haven't really had a lot of devastating ice storms around here. I've only spent about 10 winters in Harrisburg, but this is the worst one I've seen so far. Maybe it's because most of the ones I've experienced around here have occurred with temps barely below freezing, so things have typically thawed out fairly quicly following the precip. Is there a record of central PA's worst ice storms anywhere?

Good afternoon! You should have been there in the '90s! I grew up in Lancaster and we had many ice storms during the 90s. The winter of 93-94 was especially bad...It was one snow and ice storm after another.

You know what,

I've been holding this in apparently for too long now. So many of the younger posters are spoiled beyond rotten over what's happened the past couple of winters. When you and I were young, we got pretty ramped for 3-6, 4-8 type events. Young folks don't anymore. 2, 3, 4, 5 storms in the past 14 months that have repeatedly dropped a foot plus each time has raised the bar with these guys to WAY beyond what is "normal." Heck, in Lancaster, we average one 12"snow per decade. Last winter we had 3 in about a month and a half.

I simply cannot fathom the amount of griping going on this winter. It makes me sick. I can't even go in the mid atlantic thread...they got from 70" to 100" last winter, are near their average this winter for this time of year, throw in La Nina, and they should be tickled pink they've gotten any snow. Sure, they've missed out while NY, Philly, and Boston have been wamboozled, but for the love of God, what do they expect? They don't live in NE, they live in an area that historically gets 20" or less per year.

I could go on and on but I better stop...

Yikes! Stack Blow Advisory issued.

You point is correct though. It's freakin' WEATHER, "the state of the atmosphere" created by the zillion variables that comprise our little corner of the universe. It's not like it owes anyone anything. It is what it is created by forces beyond our control. If folks get pissed because it doesn't do want they want, well, good luck with that. You're going to need it.

I agree with you. Previous seasons have some spoiled. Plus coupled with all the hours watching these storms flip flop on the model runs only to fizzle. Leads to disappointment also.

Myself I have enjoyed these smaller storms. Kind of reminds me of the 2002 season. Today clearing the heavy wet snow was a lot of work.

My thought exactly. Since I have been a kid northern and west Pa get the lake effect in early winter till the lakes freeze, I loved going to potter co as a kid and have snow at deer season. then later the central and eastern areas catch the occasional Noreasters. Last year was a rarity with the amount af big events.

Even when a big event came here we were often on the rain snow line.

I remember the winter of '93-'94 as the "year of the ice storms." I was living in NYC at the time and remember a January '94 storm where the freezing rain fell so heavily that it didn't "glaze" so much as if formed a coating of slush on top of everything.

I'm not sure where this ice storm fits in historically for SC PA, but it's certainly the most memorable in my lifetime. My office in Camp Hill is STILL without power, and PP&L has pushed back our estimate to 2:30am. Apparently 3 transformers blew within sight of the building around 7 this morning. We're running our emergency equipment on generators until the juice comes back.

My drive into work was a mini-adventure as my car was struck by little icicle bombs on Front Street. By far the most impactful storm of the season for me personally.

Not sure if anyone heard about the 12z EURO...but it says this weekend looks good for C PA (.50 area wide) and that JB will eat crow regarding his talks that by Feb 14th the cold disappears in the east and relaxes winter for a while.

In fact, next week there are a couple of more snow chances. Encourgaging run by the EURO today.

Here's what it looked like at about 9 this morning, some smallish branches here and there came down. No significant damage or power outages occurred around these parts. Fortunately, as is usually the case around here with ice events.. the ice got pretty well melted by the period of above freezing and the wind took care of the rest of it. So no ice left on the trees fortunately. The quick moving dry slot late last night saved things from getting pretty bad since the precip just shut off and didn't linger and continue to build ice. The rain gauge had about 0.8-0.9" of water after completely thawed out.
