Strange...I figured we'd see Johnstown and Altoona warm before us...they are at 31° and 30°, respectively.

Definitely lots of sleet out there now again....parking lot is pretty white.

It's very strange. It's 31.2 here now. sleet/rain mix. Not sure if it is freezing that much due to rates.

Do we drop at all later before rising again? UNV's dewpoint is 28.

Maybe if those heavier bands about to move in are mostly sleet we drop a couple degrees? Either that or the CAD push gets a little stronger as it seems to be doing to our SE and we drop. Not sure exactly. I don't know that I want to see a devastating ice storm, but I would have at least liked to see something interesting and wintry...not rain.

yea i've actually seen an uptick in the amount of sleet in the precip the last half hour or so down here. Nothing to the point of really covering anything though. My wireless thermometer has bumped up to 32.2ºF, but i found that the handheld was a degree or so colder when i had it out walking around earlier. Probably gonna go outside in a bit and look at things.

Yeah, I agree. Hopefully we get sleet. Not looking that great for a PSU delay. unsure.gif

Seems to do that all the time around State College. Sleet always dominates more than expected and ZR less so. It also usually takes temps being less than 30 for ice to really accrete when it's mod-heavy intensity.

The latest 925mb analysis shows a significant ice storm evolving for the southern tier counties of Pennsylvania. Cold high pressure continues to funnel sub freezing air through the lowest levels of the atmosphere. Currently, Reading Airport (KRDG) is 27/24 with a strengthening NE wind. This is a clear indicator that locations north of Rt. 30 will all but surely fail to break freezing tonight. The combination of rimmed sleet and freezing rain will continue for the next next several hours, probably ending between 4-7am around Chambersburg and Gettysburg, and 7-10am in places like Lebanon and Lancaster. I would not be surprised to see ice accumulations of up to 1" in some of the deepest valleys.

Damnedest ice storm I have ever seen. Crazy we are warmer than Reading.

Wish that high would funnel me some cold air.

Not really. You are on the Allegheny Pleatu and several hundred miles closer to the center of the low. Thus your location is being flooded easier with warm air. Eastern Pennsylvania is furthest away from the intense LL jet and is better oriented with the high over the St. Lawrence Valley / access to NE winds. I'm amazed at how the ice is continuing its steady accretion.

It seems there is a cooler layer in eastern Pa than central Pa. temps here around 30 but mid to upper 20s in the LV. Also, these NE winds that east Pa are getting , we are not here. Currently a light SE wind both here and the airport. No sign of a NE component in this town.Been watching it all nite.Maybe thats why its colder to our east.

I've been watching the radar and i've realized that it might not necessarily be heavier bands per say. Check out this latest ccx loop.

As you see theres a ring around the radar site by some number or miles radius. It appears that the brightbanding (melting snow reflectivity) has gotten lower and thus contracted towards the radar site. I seen this on the Pittsburgh radar a bit ago too. Using a general rough 50 mile radius to the yellow/oranges and the 0.5º radar beam i come up with these echoes at something like 2300-2500 ft above the ground wrt to the radar site's elevation. I think CCX is pretty high in elevation, not sure exactly, but i'd say these echoes are in the 850-900mb layer. This is also coninciding with the max forcing moving through the area and squeezing out the best precip rates. So the column might've cooled enough to allow for a lower/thinner level the snowflakes are barely melting and some are refreezing into sleet pellets as it hits the colder air. Kind of interesting to watch.

True....just unusual.

It's looking like a forecast bust here but will see what happens rest of the night.

Yeah, that's likely it. State College reporting plain rain.

Right at 2400ft, actually.

Moderate Freezing Rain falling here in Carlisle with an ever-increasing glaze forming over everything. Tree branches moving with the wind and making loud crackling noises. Best guess on accretion is between .15" and .20". My temp has been rock steady between 29.6 and 29.9 but now has dropped to 29.5 with the heavier precip falling.

Hope we don't lose power. Thankfully we can go to my in-laws if we do lose power. They have backup generator power as they are in a retirement community.

Looking at how fast that western edge of precip is flying eastward I'd say that this whole thing is over before sunrise.

I'm listening to the trucks fly by on I-81 so it sounds like the major highways have things under control.

See you all in the morning with my final update, as long as I don't lose power and my internet before then!
