Manny
Yeah I've tried those drugs too...you might not remember much of tonight Probably not, i'm going to sleep, not gonna stay up to watch ice accumulate. Shiny trees are dope.
ParsippanyWX
Reports of steady sleet in Oneonta and also near Albany instead of snow. Interesting.

Manny
everything is iced over! just went sliding down my street and boy is it fun, but also dangerous! Can't imagine anyone driving in this weather. none of the roads near me are salted. I ran earlier tonight, and did not slip once, but once I tried turning around to head back home, I almost slipped. I was so scared i was going to take a bad step and brake my ankle or something. It's bad out there, and the snow pack is firmly intact, no doubt. Quincy
last map for the night...interesting temps vs. NAM forecast. overall, not a terrible forecast, but a large variance...some areas 2-3F cooler than forecast, others 2-3F milder...

Wxnyc
Jfk went from 26 to 28 in last hour meanwhile here in Brooklyn temp still at 27.1 down .1 since 1am it looks icy trees getting that white shiny glaze by the light. Not the night to be driving out there.

You don't plan on pulling an all nighter to see 0.3" of ice accretion? Come on man! It's more exciting than lots of things. Like paint drying. And grass growing. And...well that's about it. Chris L
John, here's hoping we got power in the morning. Still IP and ZR here. anyway, I was reading the main fourm, and if this took a classic track with the block..... Would have exceeded the Boxing Day Blizzard, if you want to read what Terpeast said... Oh what could have beenl!
RU848789
Skating rink! Freezing rain accruing quickly here in Metuchen. Just walked around and my street is completely ice-encased - took a full run and slid about 15 yards. My driveway has a bit of an incline and was very hard to climb up. I, too, love all kinds of wintry weather, even ice, so sue me. Temps up to 27F from 26F an hour or so ago. Not sure if this is temporary related to the latent heat of fusion heat release to the atmosphere from the phase change from liquid to solid; I know it's about 1/7 the energy per mole of water as compared to the heat of condensation (or vaporization, which leads to evaporational cooling of the column as it saturates), so it would have a lot less temperature impact than evaporative cooling, but it's not zero, either. Someone has been doing their reading.... Actually, those numbers, like many other chemical eng'g/chemistry/physics numbers/constants/conversion factors are indelibly imprinted on my brain. I'll always remember 540 cal/g and 80 cal/g for the enthalpy of condensation (same as evaporation, just depends on which direction) and melting. One would need to do an energy balance of heat released per mass of rain freezing times the total mass rate of rainfall vs. the volume of air that would absorb that heat, augmented by the rate of removal of that heat by the entire column (and any convective losses from colder source winds). I just don't think freezing the rain would raise the air temp by more than a degree or so, but I don't know that for sure. I could've solved this 25 years ago, lol... jconsor
The speedup in timing further decreases the chance of a change to plain rain in NYC and NE NJ north of Newark, IMO. OKX continues to have rain in the forecast for Wed afternoon for NYC - I can't see more than drizzle or freezing drizzle. Also, they're going for a high of 40F in NYC - I'd expect 33-34F, and that would be after the precip. ends or tapers to drizzle. this storm is bookin', precip may end in NYC as soon as 10am
EasternLI
Well, still sitting at 27 here with a light N wind....precip starting to pick up...I'm going to sleep...Hope there's still power in the morning, LIPA's grid is pretty antiquated. Just a reminder, I've seen several ice storms on LI.....and EVERY one was forecast to change to rain...

Quincy
Good point about NYC staying mostly ZR. I still think temps spike into the upper 30s after the precip shuts off though. We'll see. I'd rather have it stay cold and keep the glaze on everything

I'd rather have it stay cold and keep the glaze on everything Pittsburgh reporting 37 degrees as the rain is winding down there. Meanwhile still 25.1 degrees here with freezing rain. Edit: Upon getting a closer looks, it looks like I have small ice crystals falling and not freezing rain.

RutgersWx92
28 degrees with moderate freezing rain. I just took a walk outside and it was really bad. The roads and sidewalks were like skating rinks, and I could barely walk on a sloped sidewalk. The trees are also already encased in ice and I can hear the crackling from the trees every time there's a little bit of wind...
nzucker
that is not a good sign 2 hrs into the icing.... Yeah, that's a little worrying...temp is down to 24.2F here...no way we'll get above freezing in time to save ourselves.
