Mutliple accidents along cross island parkway and clearview expressway.

Roads are getting very, very icy now.

Drivers are driving like it's 50 and drizzling.

Do you remember the great ice storm of Jan 1994? That was the greatest ice storm in our area. I dont think there were that many accidents, but I remember that occurred on a weekend so that might be the reason why.

Same thing they were doing early this morning down here, while we had that freezing drizzle/mist. I had multiple people try to tell me its only rain, while I was skating across roads trying to get my route done last night. It's amazing how oblivious some people can be.

I remember it so well, It occurred on a Friday night into Saturday morning, the 32 degree line was straddling the south shore but never made it onshore due to the NNE wind.

It was a crystaline wonderland that morning, breathtaking..I'd just like to know HOW MUCH ice was there? .25, .50?

People should have to take an IQ test before being allowed to drive. Obviously driving tests just arent enough.

Heh, a lot more than that. Somewhere between 1.5 and 2 inches of ice here. It leaves the ice storms from the 70s in the dust.

That ice was on top of 3-5 inches of snow/sleet.

People can be totally oblivious sometimes can't they. My biggest pet peeve weather related remains the sleet=hail ordeal, but the rain/freezing rain scenario is a close 5th. When the temperature is 25-30F outside and it's raining, then somethings got to be up, I'm surprised people can't catch on.

Ha, the Jan 26th storm must have pissed you off then, because there was thunder, lightning, sleet AND pea sized hail all at the same time.

In their defense, hail isnt usually bigger than sleet in our parts anyway-- this isnt a part of the country used to seeing hail, so I can understand the confusion. Im sure people in Kansas and Nebraska know the difference. :arrowhead:

When's the rain supposed to arrive by the way? Midnight? 2-3AM?

its going to arrive in NYC metro by Midnight the way its developing and racing to the east - going to be a prolonged freezing rain event 7 - 10 hours in many locals in NYC metro - 1/2 inch of ice easy - just hope the winds don't start picking up too much

Wow, I didn't quite realize it was that much.

It started out in the teens with freezing rain. One of the great obs I remember from that time is Newburgh, 9 degrees, heavy freezing rain. I think Poughkeepsie was close to 0 with freezing rain. Salt doesnt work with temps that cold.

Notice how the rain quickly transitions to freezing rain once it hits Central PA. I wouldn't be shocked at a 11 PM start time for NYC and points south and west.

I agree even with a bad setup we have lots of tracking and now casting.. I wouldnt count out Sat yet either.

I was in Florida for that storm and flew back the next day into Macarthur...the island looked like a giant skating rink. Worst ice I've ever seen...

I suppose lots of folks will be in awe of it,

Do you think it's possible we can ride out the last drop of it as frozen or we'll lose some of it inevitably to plain rain?

I think it will end as rain, but it might be just the last hour or two. It will probably be below 0C through the morning rush.

Guest Patrick

That is one of the most impressive true CAD signatures I have seen in years.

Temp down to 25.3 in Clifton.

CAD banked against the Apps.

I think this could be the most significant freezing rain event/ice event in a while for our area. We got the CAD with the high in Canada, the temps are in the mid 20s and should stay in the mid to upper 20s for the next several hours as the rain arrives, the timing for a significant ice event is perfect (Night time vs Day), and we're going to see some significant QPF amounts (over an inch).

Now I know people are going to bring up 2007, but I'm talking about strictly FRZ RAIN, not Sleet. I just hope we don't see too many power outages. Power outages will be a concern if we approach and exceed a half inch of glaze.
