09z. The time stamp should be on them. My fault for not posting the timestamps.

It looks like we rip SN through 12z...15z could be changing to sleet, but hard to say for sure. The snow/sleet line is probably about halfway between the 850-700 line and the 0C 850 line on those. If we can stay all snow through 15z, then we are almost certainly good for >6"

All I care about is staving off plain rain.

I welcome the pingers.

What if one is more concentrated than the other (IOW, same water equivalent over a smaller volume.)

They are both falling on top of already present snow...so they are going to impart the same force on the structure below. Freezing rain would obviously be significantly worse due to the tree damage and power loss etc.

I don't see how that is possible..Yes it is a serious ?

3" of sleet is about the same water equivalent as 1" of ice. The density of sleet is about a third of that of ice. But the volume of the sleet is three times greater and so their mass is the same.

With the same mass, there's the same magnitude of force (mass * gravity) pushing down on wherever the sleet / ice has accumulated.

3" of sleet ~ 1" water equivalent

1" of zr ~ 1" water equivalent

the water is what is causing the weight..so they would weigh basically the same.

Thanks. I didnt ask the question originally, but I was also interested in finding out. BTW is the ratio of sleet to liquid 2:1 or 3:1? I've heard both numbers being mentioned.

A couple of hours could mean a lot. Tough forecast. I'm thinking 15z-16z mixing with sleet possibly, but it's close.

It depends on the sleet...sleet can often have "pixie dust" mixed in with it...almost like these very tiny horribly formed snowflakes. That can increase the ratio of sleet to water. If its 100% pure sleet with nothing but pure ice pellets and no minute crappy ice crystals mixed in then the ratio is usually lower.

Shoveled off my entire roof this morning - took almost 4 hours (over 2000 sq ft) . There was almost 2 feet of snow up there - not sure if the roof could've handled another 2 feet. I really wish the roof wasn't always in the shade. We are surrounded by tall pines on 3 sides. Only the east facing side is open down to the road. I looked like the abominable snowman when I finally came down :)
