wisconsinwx
It's been snowing moderately here for well over an hour. Based on reports of 0.5 to 1 inch per hour rates, I'm guessing we're at about 1.5 inches of snow currently, with plenty expected for this afternoon and tonight. BeastFromTheEast
FEMA Issues Midwest Storm Warning KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- For the first time in recent memory, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has issued a warning about the approaching Midwest snowstorm. FEMA said the storm could affect as many as 100 million Americans across the nation. Kansas City Fire Chief Smokey Dyer said it's the first time in his 40 years in the fire service that he can recall such an advisory from federal officials. FEMA has been known to issue warnings similar to this for approaching hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Coast states. FEMA Website | Ready.gov website Normally, weather warnings and advisories are the responsibility of the National Weather Service. The Weather Service is predicting a "significant winter storm march across about two-thirds of Missouri from the southwest, delivering heavy snow and high winds. Missouri Gov. weatherbo
Weatherbo, I imagine IWX had to forgo the blizzard warning in favor of a winter storm warning because of the mixing expected for se parts of their CWA. I never expected the se areas to get a bliz headline, but even as the forecast stands for you and I, it's gonna be a close call and as bad as it is, I thought a Blizz warning would get the word out more than a plain jane winter storm warning, but there can always be an upgrade. csnavywx
Some random thoughts: RFD's all time record is only 16.3". Makes it a higher chance that they come close or break this. Also a little worrisome, as it suggests some fundamental climatological "barrier" that's tough to break around there. Still, at least 1" QPF with an average SLR of 17:1 certainly puts them in striking distance. I give ORD a 30-40% chance of breaking. Right now, a blend of the GFS and ECMWF QPF seems a good bet, with a bit of SREF thrown in, which suggests amounts around 1.1-1.2 for DVN and 1.4 for ORD (west to east). One thing I noticed on the GFS 12Z BUFKIT were extreme snowfall rates right around midnight Wednesday (PIA's BUFKIT had over 3"/hr and RFD about 2"/hr), which is amazing, given that it's a lower-res global model. Same nagging thought in the back of my mind. Especially as I'm working on a snowfall record PNS for our long term climate sites (DBQ and MLI). stlirish
I here conflicting things all the time on using the 18z and 6z runs for guidance. Aren't they considered more reliable within 24hrs of a storm? I know the data is conceptual, but at times like this can they pump real data in?
