Just got in from getting gassed up we've got Lt.Sleet and mainly Fr.Drizzle and areas of Fog...temp. at 21.2,actually fell from 22.8 just 1/2 hour ago...

Ditto re: Precip here in Bangor Pa

22.3° down a fraction.

BTW took a measurement:

12" of snow cover

w/ 1/8" of ice on top.

Currently 23.4 degrees here in Trexlertown/Ancient Oaks with no precip falling.

My commute to work takes me to extreme northern Lancaster County (15 minutes south of Reading) and I am anticipating the worst tomorrow. Interesting that home was 6 degrees cooler (per my car thermometer!) on both ends of my commute today; I am wondering if this will hold true tomorrow. It never fails that the worst of my winter weather commutes is the 222 Kutztown Bypass, which always seems to be an afterthought for Penndot snow removal/road treatment!

Picking up in intensity here. Windshield was freezing up on the way home. Long night ahead. I guess we could pray for heavy rain which prevents a lot of freezing. Does anybody fully understand the intricacies of that? I know with freezing rain you almost need perfect conditions for heavy icing..

I think the standard explanation is the colder the temperatures the faster the ice accrual. If somehow the temps were say 10 or 15F and there was downpours, that would essentially flash freeze. I know in the PHL or NYC thread they discussed anyone below 26F would be in 'big trouble'. I don't know how long Berks, Lehigh, Norco, and points north will be below 26F, though I know most parts are currently.

We will have the perfect conditions tonight and tomorrow. This heavy rain is on falling on freezing surfaces already and it is not going to get warmer than freezing for a long time. That is about as ideal as you can get. The rain will stick to everything with little runoff if any. Spreading salt on the road will be useless in a few hours ( it cannot melt ice faster than what is falling)and you can not plow down to the bare surface. The roads will be a nightmare and I expect Rt 78 will be closed, rt 222 and rt 81. Just watch. In my 50 years plus and living around the country and seeing all kinds of ice storms, this will be bad. I would expect a lot of members not be able to get on tomorrow nigh because of power failures and telephone lines down.
