I thought the halftime show visual was good but clearly the sound engineer for Fox needed to be fired it sounded horrid. It could have been good in the stadium though. That Sweet Child Of Mine rendition by Fergie made my ears want to bleed.

When Fergie started singing Sweet Child of Mine I turned to my brother and told him somewhere Axle Rose just shot his TV with a shotgun. Not only did stuff sound bad. They forgot to unmute some of the mics.

Anyone had any trouble with the CFL energy saver bulbs? I have been replacing all my bulbs with them, and I had one from 4 years ago in a lamp in the bathroom which stays on almost 24/7, its the very first one I had received (got free from Duke Energy on a tour of the Cliffside NC plant). Its made by Niagara and they gave everyone 2 I think. Anyway I smelled something funny yesterday in the bathroom brushing my teeth, and smelled everywhere to find the source, even though I had never smelled that smell before, I thought a wire was burning in the walls. I was in panic mode because I couldn't see smoke, yet I could smell something strongly and it took about 2 minutes of my nose really burning with a strange chemical/burnt paint smell then I noticed the lamp was off, and it should have been on. I felt of the top and it was scorching hot. I immediately unplugged it and took outside , the first thing I thought of was the Mercury in the bulb, then really started to panic that I inhaled right to the source, and now I've probably ingested a ton of Mercury fumes :axe: Anyway, heres the bulb. (15 watt) Its not cracked that I can see. I haven't tried to put a bulb in the lamp yet to see what malfunctioned. Its a Niagara brand, which I've never seen since. All the ones I've bought are different than this brand. BTW, when I put the CFL's in every fixture last Summer, I did notice some savings on the power bill. Just wonder how safe they are with the risk of catching fire. If I hadn't been home, the ballast might have continued to fry and fry, don't know.

I have been using for several years with no issues, not that brand. Looks sort of scorched to me?

Just a question for the mods- the general banter thread is for banter about the February pattern, no? Is not the OT thread for this kind of stuff? Maybe we should have a SE OT thread?

I just found the OT forum, never ventured in there on this forum. After seeing it though, I think I'd just prefer to stay out of that place. I can remove my question if its too offensive/unrelated here. N.P.

I put those bulbs in my house when we moved in back in 2008. I did a gradual shift over. Lately, they have been burning out but I haven't noticed a smell. I kind of pisses me off because they are suppose to last a lot longer than the old style of bulbs.

I think the box claims they last 7 to 10 years with average use. Now I let mine burn longer than normal in the bathroom, but all the others in the house I switched pretty much at once last Summer...So I'm going to make a note of when they start going on. So far, the only one that went out is in a 3 way lamp, went out twice actually, but that lamp is bad to burn out a reg. incandescent bulbs too, so its probably just what happens in 3 way lamps. I wish they weren't all made in China. I can't find anything made in America anymore...everything is thrown together so quickly and no attention to quality.

I have been thinking for a while that we need a Southeast OT thread but this became the default one. The main forum OT is not for the faint of heart. They can be brutal and its always the same 5 or 6 people hating on each other.

Come to think of it most of mine have burned out in lamps and chandeliers so maybe it's the multiple bulbs. My father is an electrician so I'll ask him and see what he thinks. Yeah, if you find something American made it costs you twice as much. It broke my heart when Buck knives started making some of their stuff in China.

I know this is la la land, but something encouraging today is the massive Greenland block the GFS has in the day 14-16 time frame. I understand it's in la la territory and that models can force a pattern shift too soon. Nevertheless, with the current storm not looking so hot and prospects of warmth next week, I found some encouragement here:

it does start to build one pretty far north around day 10 , then works west and south. Something to watch. Some areas of the Southeast have had their biggest, most intense snow storms in late Feb and early March....would be nice to send this season out with a bang, and usually the block is how its done here.

Once again the models have been all over the place with the Wednesday night/Thursday system. First a good snowstorm, then nothing at all, and then back to a small snowstorm. We can't even depend on them inside 48 hours anymore. No one knows what it will do here in regards to snow. You can't depend on the models. I hope this time it doesn't snow. I am looking forward to the warmer weather.

We had one start smoking in a lamp. I've also had several burn out in less than a year. I'm going to stock up on the old fashioned bulbs before the new law goes into effect that bans stores from selling them. I also haven't noticed one penny of a difference in my electric bill.

If all we're going to get out of this is 1 to 2 inches of snow, I'd rather it not snow at all. I want a Christmas night storm or nothing at all. I am tired of all these near misses and threats that never pan out. One good storm does not make for a great winter.

I'll take 1.5" and then i'll be over a foot for the season!

I think this is the OT thread. Most folks around here do not use the OT threads that much anyway. I know I do not.. So, I like the idea of having this banter thread. Now once spring and summer get here, most folks will not be posting all the time..

How about a SE OT thread but wit no politics allowed?

Foothills, if the lamp burns out bulbs (either kind) frequently...it needs to be replaced. I googled CFL Recalls and this came up Snopes.com CFL Bulbs. There is a good bit of info regarding the bulbs.

Personally, I think they last longer but haven't really noticed a savings on the bill. When they start to 'go' though, it's time to replace them. None of them have lasted as long as the carton says. We have 8 in the bathroom (vanity fixtures) and when I noticed it took a while for them to brighten up I knew it was time to replace them.

Oh, yeah....I ventured into the OT forum once and won't likely go back. I like the way we do things here now. Don't fix what isn't broken. :)
