Mid week storm talk continued

it's the definition of a nuisance event until it hits the level that no one in their right mind really wants to deal with it. i could go for the latter just for photography sake. tho i should get more batteries i guess.

The only memory of the 1999 ice that I have is seeing every leaf of grass encased in ice. But somehow I don't remember the power being out, or much of anything else, really.

If i am not mistaken that was one of the worst power outages in BGE history. I only lost power for 4 days, but my sister who live 4 miles from me had it out for 10 days and it took 14 days to get everyone in the area back up.

I must not have lost power for long. Sounds like the main memories are from not having power.

Ok cranky here is another description:

January 14-15, 1999: A low pressure system pushed northeast from the Tennessee Valley spreading rain across the Baltimore-Washington Region. At the same time, an arctic front had sagged south from Pennsylyvania dropping temperatures at the surface below freezing. The rain instantly froze to surfaces creating a glaze. After a half to three-quarter inch of ice accumulated on trees and wires, 40 mph winds was enough to bring many of them down. Trees fell on cars, houses, utility lines and roads. The Governor declared a state of Emergency in Harford, Baltimore, Carroll, Howard and Montgomery Counties.

About a half a million customers were without power and 800 pedestrians were reported injured from falls on ice. Washington Hospital treated 250 patients for storm-related injuries on the 15th.

Montgomery County was particularly hard hit. Some people were without power for a week and 30 school buses slipped off the road.

I could only imagine what the montreal icestorm of 98 would have done here.. Over 3 inches of frzn rain fell... Total disaster.

Even 1" of ice is probably as crippling as a HECS, if not worse. I can't imagine what THREE inches of ice would do.........no wonder it was Canada's worst natural disaster ever.

I was in College Park for the January 1994 ice storm, when temps rose from single digits, and it began raining at 11 degrees.

The February 1994 ice I mostly missed as I was working in NYC, where they had back-to-back 1' snow storms on Thursday and Sunday. I did take Amtrak back tp DC early the following week, an 8-hour train ride as they had to keep stopping the train in Md to thaw the track switches. When I transferred undergound, and then stepped onto the platform at Fort Totten, it was the most amazing thing I saw in 25 years living in the DC burbs.

Guess leesburg was right... all that glue sniffing went your head. facepalm.pngee.gifblahblah.gif

You are 12 years old. Once you become an adult, you realize there are more important things to worry about remembering than snow and ice stats. If my mom still laid out my Spiderman underwear for me each morning, I too could focus on memorizing snow stats.

Yep, according to the wiki link they had to rebuild their whole powergrid.... Insane.

From the blog (http://madusweather.com/?p=788):

The strength of the cold air damming will be a big player in determining where the different areas set up. Based on recent guidance and trends, I've come up with the following maps depicting the first event (with light precip. totals over most of the region) and for the second event (which will have QPF in the 0.4-0.8" range for the most part in MD/North VA and 1"+ QPF possible in PA):

20110131-0202_storm.png

Please note the word MOSTLY in the mixed precipitation and rain categories. This indicates that these areas will fluctuate a bit during the events. Some mixed precipitation is also possible in the snow areas.

EDIT: I forgot to add a 4-8" contour to the second map... fixed now (8:21pm)

Seeing that you did pretty good on your call for the last storm.. I better get ready for a nasty ice storm...

You know what, you are the worst kind of person. I'm not 12 lol, but I gotta give you credit that was a heck of a comeback. I remember when I was 5 like you though man and talked about spiderman.

Looks like now its time for you to go change your underwear. banned.gif

Btw ellinwood, very nice map my friend. You did very well with last night. Ian, where can I get one of your books btw?

You're in good shape; my "decent" SLR is broken as well as my everyday point-and-shoot. I'm reduced to capturing life's special moments with my MotoDroid phone camera. You know, where EVERY picture snapped at night looks like it was shot in a sandstorm with a couple pinpoints of light...

NAM hour 24, 1035 high in upstate new york, freezing line through central VA over to southern Maryland. No precip yet.

Hour 30, light precip over area, hard to see freezing line detail, looks like maybe just a hair south of dc and a hair south of bwi.

Its very light snow/sleet most likely at 30
