forecast is now calling for HEAVY FREEZING RAIN on Wednesday night for DC area.

Pretty sure Heavy Freezing rain is nearly impossible unless the temperature is like 26 or below. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but heavy rain rarely freezes cause if its raining too hard it doesn't have time to freeze unless it uber cold

I am still not totally sure what all the buzz is about. People at work asking if were going to have a delay or off tomorrow and when I said neither they seemed shocked. Even up here I am more worried about how much snowcover I am going to lose and not about ice. If I simply come out of this having held onto most of my snowpack I would be thrilled, but I am worried about a few hours of rain with temps near 40 as the front comes through. I have no idea what the local mets are looking at to drive these forecasts that are giving the impression that a major ice storm is coming this way.

temp forecast is 25 for Wednesday night. How much of the precip will be left once the temps fall?

I am with you. Ice is so overhyped here. Major ice events are extremely rare. We gets MECS more often.

Wrong night, it;s over by Wednesday night as the front is through. Wednesday morning maybe but with temps right at freezing or a little above, you rarely get the big accumulation of ice as the drpolets are usually not supercooled when they hit the ground so they do not freeze instaneously like they do during true freezing rain. instead they have to slowly freeze while having warm raindrosp fall on the water. That's not good for freezing rain. I think any freezing rain by 7Am Wed will probalby be out towards frederick or beyond but of course I could be wrong as the sounding are very close to freezing but I think they need a deeper cold layer than what they are currently showing.

Last week. Enough said. But after this likely false alarm, people will go back to thinking the weather guys don't know what they are talking about. So next week when we get another storm set to drop 2 inch an hour snowfall rates at rush hour and everyone is sounding the alarm, people won't believe it and it will be Gridlock 2.0. It's a continual cycle.

It sure doesn't happen at 31 or 32 for a couple of reasons. Usually when it's that warm, the warm layer iis warm enough that it warms the drops and they are above freezing when they hit the surface. Then it becomes hard to freeze as the change of state from liquid to frozen releases latent heat which produces warmth and you also have raindrops taht are above freezing that is falling on the water so you do need it quite bit below freezing.

Some places in the Midwest right now have freezing rain and 16 degrees. That is a nightmare.

Yeah, I have sometimes wondered about this. I have seen it rain here pretty hard with the temps a good 29/30 and seen it basically run (mostly) off the trees and hard surfaces. This makes a lot of sense to me, Wes.

HA County left a urgent emergency weather message... I think they said something like half inch of ice tomorrow night. Think of what a boost grocery stores are getting with all this attention.

I hate those dumb things. I'm not even in Harford County yet I still get them. My favorite was one I received at 9:30 PM on a Sunday to inform me that there was heavy traffic on 24 and that I should seek an alternate route. :arrowhead:

No way! That sounds insane. I had no idea there could be such a scenario that would produce rain at 16.

Anyone remember those pics of ice encrusted cars getting sprayed with water around the great lakes? If they could have projected a photo through the phone that would have been it.

Somebody the other day mentioned zr at 10 degrees back in 1994, in Maryland.

it can happen if you have a really shallow cold layer .. i dont see anyone that cold reporting freezing rain right now but there are some big temp diffs out there. abiline tx reporting 28 with a thunderstorm and waco 5 counties away is 63 with a dew point near 60.
