RevWarReenactor
The flip flopping on here in unbelieveable, one minute the NAM says Ice north of Baltimore, the next minute 50's are pushing into PA. Yet another event, yet again no one has a damn clue what will happen. My gut tells me mostly rain though. That's a lot better then ice.

psuhoffman
no wonder I had so many disapointments as a kid listening to radio and tv braodcasts of the NWS forecast. This has almost no chance to be anything more then a neusance level event yet the way the news and NWS are still headlining this would have goten me excited if I was 10 and did not know any better. I just heard a radio forecast for "snow developing tonight, mixing with sleet towards morning" then "snow, sleet, and freezing rain in the morning possibly becoming rain later in the day and that there is a winter storm watch in effect through Wednesday" The people here are convinced we will have off tomorrow. They are totally neglegent. The "snow" they talk about is flurries, the sleet and freezing rain is freezing drizzle. I have stayed out of the whole NWS sucks talk until now but really its no wonder the general public thinks meterologists suck. They do not know any better, this is the stuff they hear and react too and its completely unnacceptable. Just listening to that forecast I would expect a major event tomorrow and when it doesnt happen the general public is going to think forecasts are a joke again. jacindc
Am I missing something, or not reading between the lines properly? In reading this thread, I've been getting the feeling that this is not likely to be much of an event other than well N/W. But now Feds are doing unscheduled leave, and I have friends in close-in MoCo panicking after seeing the Winter Storm Watch and the latest CWG post? If this does indeed turn out to be a non event, it is VERY misleading. The NWS makes it sound like a prolonged and dangerous freezing rain event is coming. But now Feds are doing unscheduled leave, and I have friends in close-in MoCo panicking after seeing the Winter Storm Watch and the latest CWG post? In DC it looks like this event will be minor unless the forecast models are drastically wrong. The Feds are just trying to be super careful because people left 2 hours early last week and ended up getting home 11 hours late and were pretty mad about it. Master of Disaster
Jeeze, this Watch and Advisory at the same time is going to be a nightmare to relay to the public. Think I might skip the advisory and concentrate on the event as a total with warnings.

Master of Disaster
yes making up your own set of fake warnings is definitely not going to be confusing. If you represent the 100,000 people I am sending it too, its not going to matter because you cant even read anyway. Again, you worry about answering the phone at your job, Ill worry about what people think up here.

Curlyq
The following message applies only to Tuesday, February 1, 2011 A storm system approaching the National Capital Region later this evening is not expected to affect evening commutes, but will continue through Wednesday. Conditions will be highly variable and may include ice, sleet, and freezing rain. To protect the safety of Federal workers and our community, maintain continuity of operations and assist employees in planning accordingly, we are announcing for Tuesday, February 1 the option for unscheduled leave/telework. Now is the time for managers and employees to discuss the possibility of working from home tomorrow. Uncertain weather conditions could extend through Wednesday. OPM will update the operating status as needed and appropriate. This may include a delayed arrival on Tuesday morning. OPM will continue to monitor conditions closely and will make that decision as soon as possible. Please follow your local news and www.opm.gov/status closely for updates. "The safety of Federal employees and our community is our top priority," said OPM Director John Berry. "This early announcement gives employees and managers the flexibility to stay safe and keep our government working."

Kmlwx
AmericanWx News Update [bREAKING NEWS] January 31, 2011 Washington DC - Residents in the Washington area, as well as government officials are bracing for what could be the most devastating invasion of freezing drizzle to ever impact the Mid-Atlantic. Trace amounts of wintry precipitation are expected in Washington DC tonight (with slightly higher amounts north). These trace amounts may result in a zombie apocalypse. Residents are urged to empty all store shelves of bread, milk, and toilet paper. Extra supplies of toilet paper are recommended for those who cannot handle the sound of rainfall on your roof. Pay no attention to the rational meteorologists - they know nothing of the impending doom. Come tomorrow morning we will all cease to exist underneath a trace of ice accumulation. Good luck to everyone and we hope everyone fares well. See you after the end. UPDATE: Third party sources have told us that not only may the trace amounts of ice bring a zombie apocalypse, but they may also bring a massive invasion of Ian clones.
