phlwx
I was looking at the PNS for the storm and it looks like Philly got 11.4" from 7 P Wed to 1 A on Thurs. Does anyone know if there's been a heavier dump of snow in a shorter amount of time at PHL? I can't remember if any of the 09-10 storms dumped more snow in a six hr window or if 96 hit with harder intensity...

Thunder Road
For the final # I believe PHL saw 12.2" from Round 2. 15.1" total - 2.9" from Round 1. All of the storms last year the heaviest snow set up just to our south here in Lower Bucks. (12/19 PHL 23.2", MBY 12.5".... 2/5 PHL 28.5", MBY 14.2") Still though, 12.4" from 6:30 to 1:00 IMBY was very impressive!

Philly pulled a .23" QPF during the 10 PM hour last Wednesday.

I believe it was late Feb 1987. Here n Monmouth county we got buried with nearly 2' of very heavy wet snow. It struck mid evening on a Sunday night and was over by early Monday (say 7:30 or so). Forecast was 3-6" of snow but even on TWC they were saying snowfall was reaching 5" an hour rates in heavy red bands on their radar. That storm was one of the biggest thumps I ever saw (surpassing the other night) but no one seems to know about it because it was so localized from Monmouth county south and west thru eastern Pa and northern Maryland. Below that it was rain if I remember right because the temps before the storm were so warm. Even in Monmouth county it was 40-45 that Sunday afternoon. Very sharp cutoff In that storm and just driving 10 miles to a bus stop in Matawan from Marlboro saw an 8-10" dropoff. North of Woodbrige NJ the snow cut way back with only a 3-5" amount in NYC. A bunch of us were out in Doylestown that evening & it started snowing around 9:00-10:00 at 38 degrees. By the time I was driving my girlfriend home to Bensalem at 12:00 it was pouring wet snow, 5" / hr sometime between 2-4am. Still to this date the most intense snow I've experienced. After the snow stopped around 7:00am 2/23, 40 degrees & sun turned over 19" into around 3-4" by the end of the day.

Usually you need a powdery Feb 83 storm to get that snowfall rate. But that was indeed 5" an hour rates of wet snow and any old TWC film will confirm it as they noted it on air. That Sunday was warm and like you noted no one could believe it would snow as the whole winter was very cold and that late Feb day felt like spring. But that snow came in and turned on at a copious rate from the first flake. Little wind with that storm. It was just a precipitation bomb with a razor sharp cutoff from the very heavy snow to a minor storm.

Talk about a virga storm... it was like the atmosphere was coughing up snowflakes every so often for much of the day before the snow finally started in earnest in mid afternoon. Visibility was 1/8 to 1/16 of a mile most of that time. I mentioned Feb 87 in another thread as being similar to last week. We had 18" in 7 hour. Another poster had even more. That was wet snow with 4-5 in/hr at peak. Peak here last week was 3.7 in/hr.
